Thread: Color Fade: Replaces Durability
No one who isn't a Tailor wants clothing decay, because everyone is cheap and wants to hoarde their credits. Beating this dead horse is getting us nothing. We need an apternative. Why not make clothes in the game do as they do in real life: fade? Our color palette has several degrees of saturation for each individual main color. I think that color should fade to the least saturated version of the clothing item's original color across time, that rate affected by the quality of the materials and experimentation of the tailor's skill. This way people don't technically *have* to buy new clothes, but their clothes from week 1 will fade to mostly grey given time, and if they want to have those vibrant colors back, they must buy the item again.
This sounds like the *perfect* idea to me....
....but
Actually, it's not exactly true to say that no non-tailors want clothing decay. Other crafter classes seem to understand and support the decay issue. And the decay threads in SWG discussion have many posts saying things along the lines of "I'm not a tailor, and I support clothing decay."
But I definately agree with a model where clothing decay leads to fading color instead of disappearing garments. Then we could theoretically have two things to experiment on, a durability stat that makes clothing decay slower and some kind of cloth quality stat that means that an item would start to fade at a lower condition than normal. We need decay to keep our profession relevant. So why not give us something to use our experimentation points on at the same time?
The only problem here (And the reason tailors don't already have some kind of clothing related decay method) is that this solution isn't generic. Holocron has consistantly said the reason they havn't implemented standard 'you wear it it decays' clothing decay is that it requires a clothing specific implementation. They want to find a way where they can cause decay on everything (from clothes, to furniture, to nemodian bird cages) without having to write specialized code.
Personally, however, if they do implement a clothing specific decay method, I hope this method makes the cut. It's a great idea.
I don't like this idea at all. Initially, I saw it as realistic and an easier-to-implement decay alternative than, say, turning to rags. However, I worked really hard to get that master tailor palette, and this entire community has worked really hard to get that palette restored to 255 colors. Not 39 colors with six degrees of decay (for most of them). I do not want my customers (many of whom buy things in colors other than black) to be told that the color they prefer is actually a ratty, worn-out version of a color they don't like as much. No thanks. There has to be a solution that doesn't punish us by taking away our hard-won colors! Yes, we need a turnover in our clothing markets, but this shouldn't be the way it happens.

My fiance and i got in a small argument about clothing decay.
I said "dont you think clothes should decay?" he said "no, why should they?" i got mad.
but he made some really good points which, although i still want decay, made me feel a little better.
we played UO, I was a Grandmaster Tailor in UO, I loved it, but i RARELY sold clothes. Why not? The way the UO clothing worked, was that it did decay and take damage when you fought, but it was very very little, that you basically never had to replace your clothing. In UO, there were dye tubs. all sorts. you did not need tailoring skills to dye your clothing. if you had a dye tub, or access to one, you could change it to whatever the heck color you wanted. tailors did not make money off of clothing.
Here on SWG, people can't change the color of their clothing. if they feel like changing it up a bit, they HAVE to buya new shirt, pants, whatever. At least there aren't dye tubs where people can just change their clothing color whenever they felt like it.
In UO, tailors usually made their money off of selling leather armor. The Blacksmithy skill let you make metal armor and weapons. But the tailors made the light, leather armor. That's how I made my UO money, leather armor, not clothing.
I think this is something that might be a good idea for SWG. Tailors making leather armor. It would be weaker of course (like the bone armor we can make) but it could fashionable, come in spiffy colors, and offer slightly better defenses than just plain old nothing. They could even implement the same decay system used for regular armor.
Leather armor would be cool... but it wouldn't really come in spiffy colors. At least not currently. If I'm restricted to the leather palette on cloaks,dusters,boots,etc... then there better not be leather armor available in more colors than that! (And armorsmiths? They should only have access to the metal palette! I don't know what they currently get, but I'm sorry - If I'm stuck with a limited metal palette, then they should be too. And if they get a full palette? I'll complain until I get it, too!
