I finally found it!!! A couple months ago I harvested some thoranium steel to make packs out of. It turned out to beover 900 OQ. Everytime I use that I take a *deep breath*, feeling horribly guilty about wasting such a nice quality metal. So the other day I was surveying, and realized that there was some thoranium steel on my planet. Oh cool, I can use some. I put a heavy on a nice spot of it, but didn't even bother to sample it, particularly with my paltry survey 1 skills (takes forever). Anyhow, I picked up some of it from the harvester yesterday, and glanced at the quality. Overall quality =4 (!) So I've found it!!! I finally found the perfect metal forbackpacks. And they say that tailors don't have to survey for appropriate materials...

Congrats! Now sell your leftover high quality steel for the big bucks! 
I know what you mean about the materials, I deliberately search out the cheapest materials I can find...

Yep I know what you mean.
My fiance is an armorcrafter, so anything we find that is good goes immediately into his stash (spread out, now, over 3 houses) even if we have 200k of better stuff. I've had to resort to buying crap materials or purposely mining the worst stuff I can find, just to keep it out of his house (Ok, I admit, 2 houses also belong to me).
As it so happens, my current stash of Thoraneum is 21 oq. At the last batch, I mined the 900 oq stuff, but yes, I felt bad using it for packs. So I told my weaponsmith friend that I had it, and I would happily give it to him, but I needed to keep some for packs. Sure enough, he found some 21 oq in his metal stash and we happily traded.
