Thread: Ranged Defense/Melee Defense Discussion ( Please no flames and read )
I had a friend duel me and I put my +17 MD/RD bandolier on and off with my weapon. Once I re-equiped my damage went down by 1 or so as expected since defense affects both the chance to hit and the damage.
EDIT: I'm adding a transcript of my combat chat so you don't have to read the grainy screenshot.
No pistol, no bandolier
Hit for 148
No pistol, bandolier
Hit for 148 [bad! No effect]
Pistol, bandolier
Hit for 143 [Pistol defense mods kick in and maybe the MD/RD effects]
No pistol, bandolier
Hit for 147 [Slight effect so maybe working]
pistol, bandolier
Hit for 143
My screenshot is here. And here is some more background from my thread in the chefs forums.

Hey Thanks ![]()
Hopefully more peeps look in here and a few more test this. I figured it would work both ways, glad to know someone tested it ![]()
What do you do if you are unarmed? Do you equip a weapon and then unequip it to produce the "update?"

Sorry to tell you, but...
Changing weapon effects weapon based Defenses. IT IS NOT ABOUT CLOTHING.However, with previous posters method, I'll try again later, however, best way to try if it is about weapons or not is to try with a lightsaber, since Lightsabers has "no" defense mods unlike other weapons.
I posted this on boards earlier:

are you sure it doesn't work?
docs have said that it does make the buff duration longer, which is what the tissues are suppose to do.

With or without clothes, there is no single difference in damage mitigation & miss ratio with BE Melee / Ranged defense clothes on JvJ & PvPOver 50 simple Saber Hits and same damage 272 of 582, with clothes (8 miss) & without clothes (9 miss) (of full +15 melee/ranged defense in all pieces of clothing (around total +60)Over 50 simple Ranged Shots and same damage 215 of 565 with clothes (14 miss) & without clothes (14 miss) with same clothing.Thinking missing ratio is kind of random, we can assume BE clothes not working. However, 250 might be defense cap, over this, it may not effect. I would like to see other tests on non MDEF's as well.
This is good data. A few comments:
-The number of attacks is too small for you to be able to say anything mathematically significant about the to hit chance but the fact that your damage did not change confirms that the MD/RD clothes do not do anything without other circumstances (e.g. the re-equip weapon hypothesis).
-Having +60 in various clothes won't actually stack any higher than the +25 hard cap on skill mods.
-By all testing I've done there is no defense cap and in fact this excellent thread shows you how to calculate exactly the damage mitigation effects expected from increasing your defense. I've tested the formula several times and found that it is accurate to within a couple of points, as asserted by the original poster there.
-When you did your tests, did you re-equip your weapon after putting on the MD/RD clothes? As you read, that is when I saw the very slight damage mitigation effect from the clothes.
Thanks for contributing to the testing and discussion.

No, as I mentioned there I could not try it with equip-unequip weapon. However, Lightsaber skill tree has no effect over defenses whatsoever. Unequip lightsaber or equip, your defenses are same unlike any other combat proffessions.

They do stack in Character Sheet as far as I can tell and with various specials (such as Force Aura, Center of Being adding +500 defenses) we can tell there is no virtual limit nor cap.

As I said previously, lightsaber has no effect whatsoever to defenses. If you are pistoleer, and you unequip pistol you loose significant portion of skill named "Pistol Defense". That might change on various proffessions but not in Lightsaber proffession.
Thanks for contributing to the testing and discussion.
And above all, I will retry as soon as I can.

No, those does not work, with / without clothes, same "duration" on buffs. Because actually mods on clothing is not same name name /or description with main skill. There might be an unseen character typo (like return character or additional space character in tapes / BE tissues)
