Thread: Sew tired of +1 skill tapes and attachments?

Maybe this idea has been floated before--but recently, I realized there are a LOT of vendors with pretty much useless +1 armor and clothing attachments. B/c these things drop pretty rarely though, people don't want to get rid of them--but no one wants to take up valuable slot space with +1's unless they are otherwise near the cap for the skill. I also did tailor, and while I liked it, I realized that tailors don't have a "consumable" to sell (other than perhaps cloth to armorsmiths, docs)...or any need to experiment.

I'm sure its been discussed before why tailors should not be given more skill mod type clothing to make (such as they make now with BE help)...that if tailors could make all the skill mods thhen a lot of the fun in the "loot" system would be lost.

So I was thinking, why not let tapes/attachments stay looted, but let Tailors "sew" +1 these items together?

In order to keep it from getting too powerful, I had the following ideas:

(1) Tailors can only combine items up to a +5 amount in one attachment. It would take 5 +1's to get to +5 , but fewer if +3 or +2 were used--but no one would risk rarer ones b/c of the next step.

(2) Tailors would have to *experiment* to determine the final amount of the crafted attachment--a failure would result in a +1, an amazing success in a +5.

Since armor attachments generally end up getting put in armor that wears with use, people keep needing armor attachments. The clothing attachments are less "consumable" but at least that's no different from expanding tailor-made items like the aprons, backpacks.

This would make some rare skill mod loots less valuable--but then, so did the crafter's aprons. At least on my server, the doc apron's didn't much change the value of +3 and higher experimentation tapes. Instead, what I think this would do is spread some of the value from the +3 or better items to the +1's and +2's that are strewn about the galaxy. Just balance the system out so that loot overall became more valuable instead of what basically amounts to a very rare jackpot and tons of junk when it comes to skill mods.

Also, if the dev's had time (and I know they probably don't) maybe they could add a mission that a master tailor has to complete in order to gain the ability to sew tapes together, to once again, keep skill mod items rare and valuable.

Anyway...maybe its a stupid idea--I just had too much caffine late last night and the idea popped into my head. So I wanted to see what tailors would think of something like this.

I think that the idea is solid, but the implementation would need to be examined in great detail. For example, a +5 weapon experimentation tape is worth much more thanfive +1 tapes (especially because tapes don't stack in a single piece of clothing). However, assuming it was implemented correctly, I think this is a good idea.

It's a great idea, but it would have to be limited.

For example:

I have an Armorsmith friend who was pissed that he had+20 Points werth of ARmro Experementation tapes, but couldn't fit them all into an outfit. If I could sew them all together, then he could easily sell it for millions. I agree that the power to sew them would be great, but there has to be a limit for the max, like say +5.

What if stacking +1 skill tapes in clothing was a Master Tailor skill. Maybe first you stack the tapes and then insert them as a single lump, but they still take up the same number of sockets.

So you could take 3 Weaponsmith Experimentation +1's add them together and then place in an item to use up 3 sockets. How about the combining of the tapes initially has a failure chance which could destroy them all. You could even have higher tapes do the same, sticking to the +25 limit, with an increased risk of destroying the combined tape with thehigher the skill total. Great for +1 or +2 tapes, a big riskfor anything adding upto more thansay +8.

With the greater use for +1or +2 tapes from this it might even bring down the prices on the higher tapes into a morereasonable range. Also as more tapes would be useable it should mean there would be more to go around overall, again maybe helping bring down prices.

I"m glad some people liked the idea... too bad its unlikely anything like this could get implemented, but then, you never know... once an idea gets floated out on these boards sometimes it does eventually get to the dev's who think...well why not?

Well, they have announced that the bug that allows you to wear clothing that is 1/1 or 0/0 is being fixed. So, clothing will become a consumable (not that I agree with anything but decay on use).

Anyhoo.. I truly dig this idea. Personally I wouldn't want to be able to add over +4. I would like to see it where you combine each, one at a time and with each one added, there is a risk at losing that one in the combine. To clarify: Someone brings me 4, +1 tapes to "sew" together. I cobine the first two.. no fail.. great!! I have a +2 now. I go to combine the +2 with the next +1 tape...awesome!! Now we're looking at a +3. Time to finish up.. I go to add the final +1 to the mix and wha?? oh man.. crit fail. Well heck.. I lost one so I've ended up with a +3.. that instead of losing all 4. I hope that makes sense. With this type of inherent risk on combines, I wouldn't really see the need for experimentation with this.

All they would need to do is show a skill tape as modified once you've "sewn" a point into it. That way you only lose unmodified tapes on combines. You should be able to try to combine any same skilled tapes up to the +4 I mentioned above. Oh yeah, you can add two +2's and such.. I just used the plus ones for example.

That's what I'd like to see. Not that any of you would be happy in my brain but I dunno.. my world is pretty nice.
