my wife is becoming a tailor and needs tons of help, so naturaly I got nominated.

I just need basic info on what she will need to get to master tailor, I am a ranger so I will be able to help with the resourses BIG time.

Can she just craft to get exp?

Does she have to have a factory?

Does qual of materials matter? <I keep hearing no>

Does she have to master artisan, or can she just go up the tailor tree and on to master tailor?

I looked through some of these boards but couldn't find some of the answers to these questions. thanks for all the help in advance.

Hi ...

I'd really recommend that she read Blight's Tailoring essay

It's pretty much the Tailor's Bible ... tells you just about all you need to know, and gives lists of all items available at each level, and what resources are needed for them.

As for the specific questions:

1. Yes, just crafting's the best way to learn the trade really - though it takes a long time. Grinding items out (crafting them not for sale, but to destroy, or making them in 'practice' mode which gives a little higher xp but does not put a finished item in the inventory) is quicker, but if someone goes this route the entire way, they will learn very little about the proper mechanics of the craft - what goes with what, what colours work on which items ... etc.

2. She'll need factory-produced items for schematics in the third and fourth tiers of Tailoring, and for Master schematics.

3. At the present time, quality of materials has no bearing at all upon clothing, as we have no experimentation ability and there is no decay. This may change.

4. You don't need Master Artisan. She'll have to get Dom Arts IV, but can go straight from there to Novice Tailor. (Master Artisan doesn't have any clothing schematics, anyway).

Good luck to her!

Yes there are lots of items that you can grind for XP, Backpacks are one, others here can give a better list.

Does she have to have a factory?

No, but it helps not having to make panels all the time.

Does qual of materials matter? (I keep hearing no)

Nope, decay for tailored goods it gone...

Does she have to master artisan, or can she just go up the tailor tree and on to master tailor?

Nope, just work the tree and on to tailor, but I would suggest also going up the business and survey trees as they are core to what we do.

I looked through some of these boards but couldn't find some of the answers to these questions. thanks for all the help in advance.

Best of luck to you and your wife!

Can I just clarify ...

" Does she have to have a factory?

No, but it helps not having to make panels all the time."

At Novice Tailor, and for the first two tiers of Casual, Field and Formal wear, you can craft all the components that you need.

From the third tier up, some schematics require FACTORY-IDENTICAL components. Hand crafted ones will NOT work.

At this stage, it is necessary to have a factory, or access to one.

Of course, it is perfectly possible to carry on just making the lower-tier items and never make any items that need factory components - but by doing so, you're preventing yourself from making some of the nicest tailored items in the game. Which is the entire point of being a tailor, surely?

working with a factory is complicated though, I tried it with stim packs and man I was pulling my hair out! Wish there was an easier way to do it, maybe its a little easier with clothes then stmpacks.

thank you all for your replies, and hope everything works out for her.

using factories to make stims is indeed problematic however, making comps for tailoring is similar to making compsfor meds, ie) you only need to put in raw material (no sub-components like stim Bs) usually i just throw in a schematic of 1000 and wait

Factories really aren't complex for clothing components. You simply load them with a schematic, put the ingredients in, and press the 'start manufacturing items' button.

Course, she could always pay through the nose for someone else to make the factory components for her - but you get through a LOT of these at high level (I get through about 200 synth cloth a day at the moment just trying to keep up with vendor stock).

As others have mentioned ...please do not let past experiences with factories taint your use of them for tailoring ... for tailoring, factories are super SUPER easy. The difference is we only use the raw materials to make the factory items so there is no problem with crates as ingredients and such.

Furthermore, tailor recipes use only 1-3 ingrediants and they are nearly all the same ... just different combinations of fiberplast, metal and inert petrochemical (jewelry settings require crystaline gemstones is really the only exception).

I know when I first started out as a tailor, I dreaded the day when I would need a factory to make crates for high end stuff. Turns out my fears were unfounded ... it is so easy and as a matter of fact, I use crates for clothing even when it is not required since it is so easy.

On another topic ... if your wife wants to own a shop ... she will also need the Business line (to at least level III) to get a vendor ... and perhaps all the way to merchant if she gets serious.

Yeah, crates are wonderful. I remember how great it felt not to have to hand-craft a stupid synth cloth panel and metal fastener every time I wanted to make a pair of pants....

Specific schematic requirements aside, having factory-made components is simply good for saving time and avoiding frustrating busy-work.

The ridiculous requirements for factory-identical components, which virtually mandate factory ownership for each and every tailor, are a remnant of the dead and buried Industrialist profession. Given that profession's much-deserved demise, they shouldhave ditched the factory requirements. We're yoked by the artifacts of a disintegrated interdependency system that couldn't have, shouldn't have, and didn't work.

What exactly was the Industrialist supposed to do? I've heard about this now-extinct profession, but I think it was gone even before I started Beta....

I don't think it ever made it into beta, it got cut around the same time that they decided being a miner wasn't fun enough to warrent it's own profession.

Basically this is the way it was suppose to work. An industrialist buys schematics (primarily components from lower level crafters... there was still schematic revocation at this point, so master tailors couldn't make components at all) and runs them through his factory. Then he either sells the crates of components to the higher level crafters who need them, or if they are finished goods he sold them to a merchants... blah blah blah...
