Thread: Can you fix my clothes?
"Can you fix my clothes?"
In the beginning I politely said, "sure i will" figuring it to be part of tailoring. Then a few failures and some VERY upset customers later and I decide to offer repair tools to people to fix their own items. Then a few "your stupid repair tool broke my clothes! you better make me new ones for FREE!!" came rolling in and now i'm tempted to not even offer repair tools to people at all.
I'm sure that many of you, my fellow tailors, have run across some form of this. I am curious as to how others deal with it. Do you make them the items for free? Do you give them a discount on replacement items? Do you just put them on ignore when they get so irrate?
I personally, have discovered that the people that want their clothes repaired aren't even customer's exactly. They wouldn't pay regular price for anything if the force counted on it. Half their clothing is Loot Wear and they have no interest in clothing in general. So, where is the advantage for a tailor to repair clothing or even provide repair tools?
How much do you charge to repair given the likelyhood of failures? How much do you charge for a repair tool if you don't repair items yourself?
Any help or advise with this issue would be greatly appreciated ![]()
I've decided not to repair any clothes or sell repair tools for the very reasons you stated - irate customers blaming you for your tools messing up their clothes, or blaming you for unsuccessfully attempting to repair their clothes.
It's just not profitable to repair clothes.
I'm also not repairing clothes. It's not worth getting yelled at if the tool doesn't work, especially if the item they want repaired is BE enhanced or has a skill tape added in.
This decision has saved me time to spend on my actual customers. Every person who's asked me for a repair so farhas been a stranger, and most of them have told me that the items they wanted repaired were loot, so I'm not really worried about offending my customers. I also don't have to bother with finding Master Artisans to make me high quality repair tools, and I don't have to use up inventory space hauling the tools around.
Right now tailors don't have any advantage over the average joe with it comes to clothing repair. While tool quaility does help, repairs are still very iffy no matter what you do.I think this small detail was overlooked by the developers. Armorsmiths have the same exact problem as we do, only with their armor. So we are not along with not having any special ability to repair what we make.
I make my own 99% repair tools and tell the customer up front that there is no garantee I will succeed on all their items. If I do fail i replace the item (unless it is an enhanced piece). I replace any failed items becuase I am just nice like that
but even if I didn't replace themI dont think the customer would be upset since i warn them up front. I have had no problems so far.

Something I think people should know is that you often fail on items you cannot yet make.
But anywho, after horrid failures on my own clothing, I have decided never to touch one again.
I had some nice, HQ Cond. copper in my stash, but in a stack of less than 1000, I made a schematic of a 96% tool, ran 'em through and promptly dropped all my engineering skills. It's a "Limited Edition" tool and I'm not planning on keeping any for myself. Hey, if I ruin my own clothes I can make myself new ones. When I decided to go into tailoring it wasn't to mend clothes it was to help create a "total" image for my customers. They pay me for my time and advice and I don't let them leave my shop in anything that I wouldn't wear myself. They don't come back to see me to mend their clothes, they come back to see me to add to their wardrobe.
Until there is actually a bonus for tailors mending clothing (as we should considering the "Tailoring" line), I'm ignoring it for the time being.

Actually, this is not true, at least according to the patch notes of BigPatch 2:
http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/recent_updates.jsp?o=58777
# Items with low hitpoints are now unrepairable.
# The difficulty to repair an item now increases as the item becomes more damaged.
# Skilled crafters gain bonuses for the repair of items within their field.
There's still a lot of murkiness to it, but it does seem clear that you'd want a tailor to attempt the repairs.
I haven't had any repair requests, but I have had several *replacement* requests, which I'm more than happy to fulfill....
