Thread: Tailoring: what makes it fun to YOU?

Ok, there have been a lot of threads lately where there have been some ideas that some of us (me included) have had very negative reactions towards. And I've been kind of thinking about this, and seeing if I can understand, for myself, why that is, and what it is about those that would make tailoring less fun (for me).

So I thought it would be helpful if maybe we started a more positive thread where we could understand what it is about tailoring AS IT IS RIGHT NOW that makes it fun for people. This is not a place to gripe about what you don't like, or what should be done. It is a place to express what you consider "sacred ground" of the tailoring experience, what makes it fun for you, why you are a tailor, and what elements you'd like to see preserved at all costs.

Gotta go to a spinning class, I'm out the door, but later in the day if I get a few minutes I'll post my own ideas here. But I'd like to read what others have to say as well

Gyopi hit it dead on for me. I like getting to be creative and even more so talking to other creative people. The most fun I ever have is when I have a job from someone who's not afraid of color! I get to express my new ideas all across the galaxy. It's also a good way to catch up on the current events too. I have a number of customers that are always telling me what's going on in their corner of the universe. I just like socializing I guess

The fun of tailoring to me is definately the creativity. I love coming up with different color combinations that I've never seen people wearing, or deciding to match a top and skirt I've never put together before and having it just click. And I love finishing an outfit or wardrobe for someone and seeing them so excited over how cool they look.

I love the creativity. When I first started out, I was planning to be a weaponsmith -- I thought you could really customise weapons, and found that this wasn't the case. At the time there was a serious lacking of tailors on my planet (entertainers had to go to Naboo to find anything other than artisan-wear), so it seemed like a good route. It turned out to be an excellent one. I love putting together unique garments (such as that's popular).

I love instigating trends, sending someone out of my shop with something that nobody else seems to be wearing -- and seeing ten people come in the next day saying "I want what he had!" For that matter, I love *watching* the trends, seeing different fashions actually spring into being and becoming popular. It's the antithesis of the 'everyone wants camo pants and a duster' problem, and it's one of the things that for me, makes tailoring really fun. It gives me the feeling that I'm actually having an effect on the world around me.

I love doing the *difficult* jobs -- matching garments to armour, matching *colours*, and finding the perfect necklace to suit a certain shirt. I've never complained about not having the colours numbered, because it's something I've developed a skill for, and which I've built a reputation on. I've never yet left a customer unsatisfied because his new pants don't match that shirt he looted a week ago.

I love the customer service aspect, the chance to really interact with people in a way that most professions simply don't allow for. "Parties at the local tailor shop!" became a regular occurence for me months ago, small hordes of people hanging out together and chatting while waiting for their fitting.

Really, it's never been about the money for me, although the capitalist aspect of it is *also* a lot of fun; I like the competition, I like cornering what degree of the market I can. But all of these other things are the real lifeblood of the profession. Without those...I'd be a weaponsmith after all.

Two me, I think my enjoyment of tailoring boils down to 2 types of experiences, both of which are unique to tailoring (and perhaps image design):

1) The "live" customer exchange where I'm able to exceed their expectations and send them on their way with something unexpected. Customer comes in and asks for "something sexy but not slutty, something I can wear while healing in a hospital, and features medium green and pink". This is a typical sort of non-specific requirement that I get. Then I get to work, work with the customer, I try a few things, get some feedback, make some adjustments, and together we come up with something awesome that they love and didn't really expect when they walked in that is sort of a combination of my creative efforts, and theirs coming together.

2) The fashion creations on the vendor. When I used to restock the store vendor I'd often spend some time working on "new stuff". Color combinations of different clothing articles that I hadn't seen used in a particular combination before. These items would inevitably end up listed consecutively on the vendor and more often then not would also be bought together as a package. That is always gratifying, as is seeing somebody wearing it, or better yet, getting a /tell from them afterwards telling you how much the like it.

I like the creativity too, but to more specific, I like the choices. I think that's the greatest things about the profession. All the colors, all the combinations. The only problem is when you start to feel those choices wittled down by repetition. I'm totally psyched about crafting the chef stuff. Just throwing us a little bone like that every couple weeks or so would go a LONG way toward keeping me happy with the profession.

This is a nice positive thread, Arthur, thank you.

I love restocking my vendor. I really do. I love seeing what people bought, especially some of the combinations they buy. I love trying to picture these outfits in my head.

I love the amount of things there are for us to make. I love trying new combinations and new colors and sometimes building outfits around pieces that I don't normally use.

I love the customers that come in and say "I need a new look, just make me something different" and they really mean it. I love when they leave happy.

I love that there are soooo many options that different planets have different trends (usually based on what the local tailors like to make) I like to travel and see what people in other towns are wearing, especially in cantinas.

I love the amount of customization tailoring has.

I love seeing a customer leave happy.

I love it when they give me a not-so-specific clothing order, so I get to be creative with what they want.

Awesome thread Arthur!

For me the creativity aspect is awesome, however, the thing I love most is surprising people. My in game husband sent a friend to me the other day who is a dancer and working her way through tailor, he asked me to make her a couple of cute outfits to help her when she dances. She was very nice and excited simply because she was getting a new "outfit" that I just had to surprise her. I made her 3 Ball Gowns, 3 pair of shoes, a skirt, a Sports Bustier, 2 Luxurious Gowns, etc.... She was so shocked that I swear a tear may have rolled down her cheek. Because of that small act of kindness she has sent 10 people to my shop in the last 24 hours. It really made her happy and shocked her that there are still people in the game who are nice and not money hungry. I do charge the going rate, I do not keep my prices patheticly cheap nor do I keep them completely outrageous.....but I do like to go the extra mile for those that are very nice. Going that extra mile really makes their day and mine.

What's fun for me is stocking a shop with everything. I dunno why , I'm not too introspective. I've also always enjoyed... well... playing dress up I suppose, for myself I mean. Playing with clothing for myself. I like puting together neat outfits, and placing em in my shop for view (tho I had to take down a lot for storage reasons )

What makes tailoring (and image design for that matter) fun for me is that it is a nice combination of being creative and getting to meet and talk to all sorts of interesting people.

I love...

.. it to make new clothing.. experimentation on new outfits, combining different colors and making my own fashion trends

.. trying something new, making stuff i rarely see on somebody and try to make it more popular

.. making my customers happy

.. the creativity.. best thing is when customers are giving free hand to make them something they would look good in just name me a direction/profession/idea how they wanna look

.. modelling myself and getting friends to model for me in new outfits i create

.. meeting other interesting people, chatting with them for hours while i am making a few clothes for them (and afterwards, also without doing clothes)

.. seeing people wearing my clothes when i enter i starport or a cantina or somewhere else

There is only one reason I am a tailor. That is to see the customer happy when he leaves. I want to help someone to get their avatar looking exactly the way they want. (Not including Image Design of course) I love having people come up to me, not knowing what they want, and I through some clothes on them and make suggestions. They will pick and choose and try things on and eventually, get an idea of what they want to look like.
