Thread: Poll How many of you Tailors consider yourselves Star Wars fans?
Although not a huge star wars fan (I don't dress up and go to conventions), I have seen the movies and read some of the books. I am not all for making clothes that only appeared in the movies because everyone will be running around looking like Han or Luke. On the other hand, I am strongly against any clothing that resembles cowboys, mariachi bands, or salsa dancers. (I left Radiant because I felt the "spanish" language did not fit in with the star wars theme) On that note, as long as the clothing resembles the same theme throughout the movies, books, comic books, and other games, I think most people would be happy.

I'd also like to point out for the hard core star wars fans, who have obviously then read the books, that there are no visuals in a book, other then your own imagination, which is different for each person... I am quite certain that not every single outfit worn in every "scene" in each book is described in detail...(Look at all the different clothing and styles in some of the cantina scenes in the movies).. I'll admit that I get more then a lil annoyed when customers ask me to make them look like Blade (a common request for me), but there are some people who just want different styles of clothing, which they can best describe using the labels we have placed on them here in the real world.. That doesn't mean those styles couldn't have existed somewhere in the Star Wars world....

I'm a fan, but I've been guilty of catering to the customer's desires over Star Warsy-ness. So I've made my share of "tuxedos" and Matrix and Lara Croft outfits and I did it with a smile. I don't go full-on RP and pretend not to know what a cowboy hat is.
Ok, one time I did. But that was evil. Hehehe.
I still want thigh boots though! It's sci-fi chic.
Star Wars fan and also a realist. A true RPer is just as insulted by a display labelled "Luke Skywalker" as they are by one labelled "disco queen" because in the RP sense, 90% of us should have no clue who Luke is. That doesn't change the fact that a lot of people want to dress like Luke Skywalker or a disco queen.
Look past how people are describing things, though, to what they're describing. Do you object to a ruffly dress with a lot of movement for dancing, or only one called a "salsa dress"? Do you have a problem with a heeled mid-calf boot, or just a boot labelled "cowboy"? I know a female Wookiee who is dying to have a dress put in for her. She's described it to me down to the last detail, and it sounds absolutely appropriate for a Wookiee, but it could also be described as a medieval peasant dress (in a XL-Tall).
I'm more of a science fiction fan than a gamer, and more of a gamer than a Star Wars fan - or for that matter, any media fan. I'm a literary SF snob; with few exceptions, real science fiction has almost never appeared on the big screen or the little screen. Those few exceptions were mostly ignored by the general public.
True story:
In 1973, I was in a junior high school science fiction club that was listed in the Star Trek Welcommittee club directory, so we used to get rumors leaked out from the studios about upcoming science fiction films. (By the way, this was back in the day when a busy year had two or three of them.) Here is the rumor that we got that year, verbatim:
"The guy who made American Grafitti is making a sci-fi film about figher pilots in outer space with laser swords."
It was the unanimous opinion of everybody in the club that this was going to be the lamest movie in the history of science fiction on film.
It wasn't, mostly for three reasons. Number one, for the time, Industrial Light and Magic pulled off miracles. Number two, there are some great classic sci-fi film and classic movie references and inside jokes in that first film. And number three, George Lucas used to be one heck of a director. (Having seen his last few films, I insist very strongly on "used to be.")
I play SWG because it's the best funded, best designed science fiction MMPORG, period, and that's the only reason. If Neocron worked as well as this game does, I'd drop this game in a New York nanosecond. For all that it's not much more than a Judge Dredd ripoff, it's a much grittier, and more interesting, universe. But they are so under-capitalized that it hurts me to think about it.
I put up with the Star Wars aspect of it - while role-playing my interpretation of it, one that's heavily influenced by David Brin's columns on the subject, with which I pretty much 100% agree. And I give thanks every day that there aren't anywhere near as many obsessive otaku fanbois as I was expecting to see.
On the other hand, having agreed to play in a Star Wars universe, I have been known to give a ration of excrement to people who are just blatantly out of character. For example, relevant to the topic, I flatly refuse to make blue jeans. Last weekend, one of the musicians in the Theed cantina was giving another musician grief for not wearing clothes. I pointed out to him that his blue jeans and t-shirt were just as out of character, and just as out of place. He gave a lame excuse about how his character grew up poor, and so it's in character for him to dress that way. I reminded him that poor people in the Star Wars universe don't dress like that - and then mostly left it at that.
(I'm also chronically annoyed by the anachronistic, improbably funny, and ripped-offnames, but that's bothered me in every MMPORG I've ever played. Too bad the CSRs don't have time to respond to name reports any more.)

Define your terms. I'll grant you that there's a lot of space opera (like Star Wars) and other science fantasy cluttering the landscape, but there have also been some excellent (and many more not-so-excellent) hard SF films, some of which have found box office success and critical acclaim.

Wow, I'm almost like your geeky opposite. I mean, I appreciate real science-based sci-fi just as much as the next extremely nerdy girl. But my first, best love is that stuffthat some folks callsci-fi that'spractically sword-and-sorcery with aliens thrown in. I guess I just read way too much Edgar Rice Burroughs or something. That kind of thing never gets made into movies anymore, because most people think it's too cheesy I guess. But someday, there will be a big budget movie made of Princess of Mars, and they'd better not screw it up!
I love StarWars. I don't really collect SW stuff, but I still have all our old trading cards and toys (including the Death Star playset, but it's a little banged up from doing double duty as Cobra Headquarters). This is actually the first online game I've played, and the only reason I really got into it was because it was Star Wars.
Most of the wishlist things I don't really mind. I mean, we really see a very small amount of the worlds in the movies,so there has to be a whole world of fashion out there thatlooks nothing like what we see on the main characters.But there are a few super out-of-place things that would really bug me. Like cowboy hats...
