Thread: How to make a profit?
1) New players, who buy from whoever they can find. If you can find an under-served market, as I have, you make money. Not huge money, but more than you need. I used to know everybody in Restuss, but now 75% of the clothes I sell are going to people I've never heard of before. I strongly suspect that they just bought the game, and I'm the first tailor they found.
2) People changing their minds. Sure, player X has all the clothes he needs now. Two weeks from now, he's going to drop one of his professions, rethink his whole character concept, and want a whole new look to go with it. Maybe several of them.
3) Tailor turnover. You can make Master Tailor in about 9.5 hours of grinding, by my calculations, if you use every trick in the book. If you do this on a highly populated planet, you immediately get buried in tells. At which point, if you're like 95% of the people who've done it so far, it seems, you discover that you hate making and selling clothes, release the points, and go back to blowing stuff up.
4) Clothing obsolescence. In a couple of weeks, SOE will fix bioengineered tissues; they're almost fixed now on the test server. At that point, every high end character in the game is going to want to throw away most of their clothes and buy new.
5) New options soon, probably new schematics later. In that same patch, many items with limited color selection are getting fixed. Suddenly, a whole lot of clothes that aren't getting made now because they're ugly will suddenly become available. All it will take is one bellwether to wear one in public, and everybody will want one. Then some of the missing schematics will probably eventually appear, like the bikini skirt and the scout vest, and people will want that. Then SOE will release new schematics in some form or other, and everybody will want that.
By the time all of those things happen and the sales push from each runs out, you'll be bored with the whole game and quit, in all likelihood.
I'd be more worried if I were an armorsmith than I am as a tailor.
