Thread: Was I in the wrong here? Need the opinions of some other tailors....
I used to work retail (Heck, who didn't) and I remember one guy that we called "coupon-man" who would come in and spend 45 minutes with one of us talking and debating over one item or another, and then in the end, he'd pull out 15 coupons and want them honored as well. He was quite funny. We'd take him by the hand and lead him through the guided tour of everything, and when he started pulling out the paper, we just bring in the manager to deal with him. Poor Len! He knew what a hassle it would be everytime he walked in.
I guess in my experience, no matter how much of a hassle a customer is, they are a customer. The customer is always right, on most occassions. At least until they start to be abusive. Most of these rush order people are used to weaponsmiths and armoursmiths that DO crank out crates of 100 advanced composite armour. Their business can handle massive amounts of the exact same colour, where ours cannot.
40 Robes. wow, that's alot of synth, jewelry settings, resources, etc... It would take an awefully long time to set up if I didn't have all the crates ready (which I usually do) The customer must realize that a special order is just that. It's special. It takes alot more time and effort on our parts. Don't feel bad at what happened. Too many people (adults too I might add) are just ADD and can't stand to wait. They will probably not go elsewhere, but just forget about it and not bother. If they do go elsewhere, you are not losing out on anything.
For me, it's not about money. I don't play a tailor to be wealthy. What's the point? I can be an armoursmith or weaponsmith and make more cash selling those, and not worry about colours or satisfying the tastes of style. It's about DPS (Damage per second) to the combat people, and nothing else matters.
Feel happy that you enjoy your profession and have good customers. *Big Hug* ![]()
Ask anyone who runs a real life business, a rush order always comes at a higher price. Anyone who asks for a discount in these circumstances deserves to be laughed at. Time is money. If they want you to stop the world to make their pitiful garments now now now now now, well then they should be willing to compensate you for the inconvenience of doing so.
Also the "if you don't give me a discount, I'll find someone else" is a last-ditch threat that people try and use to bully you, I generally do not look upon this tactic in a friendly light. It means they honestly don't give a flying fart, and are praying to god that you are a sucker and will give in to being threatened. Do not feel bad in the least for telling them to stick it where the sun don't shine. Sounds like you have more than enough customers and a good reputation going. So don't worry about it ![]()
Well, here's the other thing that makes me crazy, and I'm sure you all have had one of these...
The conversation goes something like this:
JoeSchmoe sends a tell....he needs this outfit and he needs it right away! Could you please please help him out????
I reply, being the overly generous and usually pretty naive nice person that I am, "Well I'm kinda swamped right now, but I suppose if you *really* need it right away I can squeeze you in"
Joe says, "Oh ya I really need it as soon as you possibly can, it's really important blah blah I love you thanks so much kisskiss"
So, you put aside what you are doing and make up Joe's order. Ok great it's all done, Joe will be so happy....so you send him a tell. "Heya Joe, your orders done and ready for you to pick up!"
Joe replies..."Ok be there in about an hour or so-I'm up on dantooine doing missions"
".................."
Now, admittedly, I only have myself to blame for not being firmer about making people wait, but GAWD that drives me nuts!!!
I really wish people would get their heads out of their proverbial arses and realizes that they are NOT your only customer, and you don't stand around all day waiting for an order from them!
Of course, they're not all like that and on the other hand I had a customer I would have liked to kiss yesterday. He put in an order for factory crates. I told him I wouldn't be able to get to it until the next morning as I was very busy and was in the middle of a big run of crates already, not to mention that I was on another planet at the time. His reply was "That's ok, I can wait, it's no problem at all. I really appreciate you taking the time to do this for me". I just wish all my customers could be like that ![]()
I own a business irl and I can tell you that there are three things that every customer wants: quality, time, and price. They can only have two of the three though. They simply can not ask for the very best thing you have in the quickest time frame for the lowest price. One of the three wants has to give.
Just as in real life, on swg there are always a few that don't understand this concept. When I run across these people I always reply, "I'm not unreasonable, but this is what I can do for you. You may however, find exactly what you want from another Tailor". MOST take their business elsewhere or just don't ever get what they wanted. I don't mind this because i'm the one that decides what my time and potential aggrivation is worth to me. This is a game after all. There's no point in me logging on to relax for a while and quickly finding myself irrate over someone demanding thier black sandels for 20 credits. Then seeing them turn around and drop 1.4 mil on a gun from a weapons vendor.

This is why, if I'm going to sneak someone into my schedule (and I do for my good customers) I only do it when they say "I'm on my way to your shop now"....
But you will find all types out there, should try makeing armor too. "My armor just stopped working, can you make me a full suit of triple layered composite right now?"
Don't let the bad ones get you down, and give the good ones reasons to come back.

hehe OMG I can not say how many times I have had this happen. it drives me insane.
I do know I'm way too nice and have a hard time refusing people, I've gotten a little better at it since I have been doing this since beta and was 4th tailor on my server. But I'm still too nice ![]()
I have a hard time saying no, and avoiding people, so unfortunately it ends up screwing my game play and I log out sometimes. Don't let this happen to you, be FIRM! unlike me ![]()
at least it's not like it was in the beginning where you'd log into your shop and there would be (not kidding) constantly 20-30 people in my shop and I would get as many tells as i logged in, it would take at least a half an hour before tell hell would settle down. The only thing I and the other tailors could do was pretend we were afk in our shops when we were really stealth stocking and crafting and trying to level, and have a huge afk message with shop info ect in it and always be on afk. it's so nice not to be on afk constantly now.
I do find there are 10 good customers for every jack ass, so concentrate on those and try to be firm with or ignore the other type ![]()
I think you made the perfect decision. Someone who expects a HUGE order rushed ahead of others that placed orders first and also to get a discount for trying to rush me can bend over and kiss my @$$.
*hug*

You did the right thing here dear. A lot of the newer people coming online to play SWG just don't appreciate our profession & take it for granted.
Hug!
These of course are the people that live in their armor....
Learn not to care so much.
It sounds cold, but why should you care about these people so much. If they are annoying make them understand that and then they won't make that mistake next time or they will get mad and go away.
Either way you win. ![]()
