It sounds like you're thinking of Wookiee armor, which did come later.

There are other ways to provide the sockets (which is really what I and other trandoshans are after). For example, they could add clothing bracers and shin guards to the game. These would go in the hand and foot slots but keep the hands and feet exposed, as far as the art goes, therefore not violating cannon...
