Thread: How does a new tailor make any money??
My moneyspinners?
Black Simple Shirts, Black Leather Gloves, Shorts in Various Colours (Entertainers love 'em) and Black Hide Boots.
Aside from the shorts, all of these items are very desirable amongst characters looking for a simple but cool look. Hide Boots are also an amazing xp spinner for the amount of resources/effort required to make them.
The other tip is to price realistically. If you make something that costs you 60 credits in resources, don't put it out for 600.

That and crate/schematic sales to armorsmiths -- give them a discount from retail for continued business and you've got a nice steady stream of income.
That and i got a free set of composite
Hmm, in my experience the fieldwear line is by far the least lucritive of the three, and the difference on my server is even more magnified because of the fact that fieldwear prices are so depressed on the bazars since every novice is doing that line first. In fact when I was selling on the bazars before master I think the only thing I had any luck selling in fieldwear was uniform boots and the packs. For the rest the prices were just too depressed to even be bothered with. I'd guesstimate that the breakdown in sales on the bazar was like 5 casualwear to 3 formalwear to 1 fieldwear as a ratio.
Stuff like cloaks, muscle shirts, decorative vests, bustiers, all types of skirts, the wookiee stuff in formalwear and casual wear, comfortable slacks, thin striped pants, some of the necklaces, and others are just huge sellers.

What kept food in my mouth when I was starting out was selling backpacks and dusters on the vendor. If you are not in a guild and really need to make money (as I used to be), master the field wear tree first and then work on tailoring experimentation next.
It's been a while, so can't remember for sure, but i did formal wear first (I wanted the patterned slip dress sooo bad) then casual. cloaks and small bustiers sold well, i do both for 800, even now with sockets or whatever. No one told me about the cartridge belts, so i ended up grinding cloaks...same xp, take hide tho. Good part about that, I ended up joining a guild to support my hide habit and haven't ever regretted that. ![]()
Just look around and either start your own fashion trends or try to find a cool look someone else has done, and copy that. My first big order was uniforms for a PA using the decorative vest and thin striped pants. Take your time and hang out in cantinas with your novice tailor title, and you will see the styles, as well as get /tells with 'can you make...' that is the best indicator for your server.

I swear, the stranger the color combo the better it sells. Yah, a lot of people are boreing and like black/white clothes but I just recently made an interesting bright blue and orange outfit with a Decorative Vest, Soft Undershirt, Slacks, and Dress Slippers (because they are the only shoes I can make in orange).
I went to show it off in our cantina and most people's opinions at first was that it was just bright but as they looked at it that "hey, thats actually kinda cool." or "that's not bad at all, I never thought those two colors would go together."
Same thing with my mauve/yellow Spec-Ops Duster, Paramilitary Camo Pants, and umm I don't remember what shirt but I made it yellow.
Anyways, make things in the not so usual color combinations and it catches people's eyes.
Novice Tailors should sell:
Black Smock and sell it under the name Black Leather Trenchcoat
White Smock and sell it under the nameWhite Leather Trenchcoat
And so on![]()

Take a look, it may open you up to new color combos
in my experience anyhting black sells best though
prefably 4 Sockets..include that in the name of the items and it will sell like hot cakes.
I make my millions nowadays selling bio engineered clothing, but you'll probably have to wait with that since you are noveice and fail more often.
Since reaching Novice Tailor, I've discovered the wonders of colour ![]()
Although it gives Artisan xp (not Tailoring) the Soft Undershirt has some great colour options - you can even do Star Trek-esque purple/black combos!
One thing to make your items a little more attractive, though, is to name them with the colour. But be creative! An Autumnal Brown Sleeveless Dress with White Detail sounds much nicer than Brown/White Sleeveless Dress...
