If you have a lot of hides, hide boots are great.
If not, I like either reinforced combat staffs or simple wooden staffs. Both give good XP per build and use basic materials.
I've done this grind7 times now

hi all, as a novice tailor i was wondering if any of you peeps could give me some advice. What i want to know is what is the best thing to craft that will give you good tailor xp and enable me to gain skills quicker? its coming slow at the moment so any help and advice would be most welcome.

Before you grind your way to the top, I would seriously consider making a few of EVERYTHING you can make on the way there. That way you don't get to Master Tailor and go, "What's a Revealing Top?", or "What you you mean I can't make red Uniform Boots, I'm a master!?!", or other such questions.
Tailor is a skill that has a lot to know, and while it's not complex, you should be familar with your colors, textures and styles. Grinding makes you lose all sense of that.
Good luck though!

Craft. Or do not craft. There is no grind. ![]()
Seriously now, it is indeed advisable to tinker around a bit with the clothing schematics at your disposal to get to know what you can do with each of them. Andyes, *cough* *cough* see the FAQ in the stickies for a grinding guide *cough* *cough*.
Learn the trade. Feel it flow. This way, "there is no ignorance, there is knowledge."
