"what's the point in grinding to master tailor you guys?"

No one wants, or already has, everything the Domestic Arts IV/Novice Tailor can create. So really, your only way of selling anything, or getting anything you want, is to grind. And personally, I don't want to occasionally craft so that in 3 months I might might Master Tailor and FINALLY be able to wear what I want.

Forcing a grind for high quality items is ok. Forcing a grind for ALL items isn't. You shouldn't have to master your craft to make everything. You should have to master your craft to make everything, better. That's one of the reasons I didn't mind Tailoring in Dark Age of Camelot, because you could make almost everything right away, about midway up you could make even more things. As you advanced you just got better and make higher quality versions. Star Wars Galaxies method of denying a great majority of things, especially things that people want, untill you've grinded mindlessly and carpal-tunnel-incudingly up, is just evil.

And the whole player run economy, where a few select PA/powergamer backed tailors can utterly destory any hope of profit for the little solo tailors by selling things at a loss is as well, evil.

So I guess the point in grinding to master tailor is that we HAVE to. We've given no choice. We don't want to wear anything we can make at low levels, neither does anyone else.

I still don't think you absolutely have to grind to advance, if you're willing to get out there hustling and selling.

But that said...

What's the best "grind" item that doesn't require metal or subcomponents? I've got chem harvesters that give me oodles of Fiberplast and Polymer, but tend to just pick up my metal in smaller quantities as needed....

I just make what sells and enjoy myself. I think of it as "playing SWG." I've made enough for a house. I've met all kinds of people travelling around, sticking a few of whatever's selling on the local bazaar, popping in at cantinas, and supplementing my income with delivery missions.

Really, why grind? If you aren't enjoying sleeveless dresses and military backpacks, what makes you think you'll suddenly enjoy making fighter flightsuits and bikini leggings?

Alciril, hon... perhaps that's because you're Field 3, Formal 4 and Tailor 2. As a novice tailor on Corellia sitting in the Cantina I didn't sell a single thing (unlike during beta where at times I felt like the most popular person in the cantina). People just didn't want what I could offer, or already had it from another novice tailor.

I find that really sad, because that's all I really want to do. Sit in a certain place and make clothes for people, making them happy. But right now I can't offer anything they want and I have to grind to get there. And I hate grinding. I absolutely hate it, but i don't see another way to get to a point in the game where I can do what I love to do most.

You're the lucky one and I envy you for that... though I'm fairly certain it took a lot of grinding on your part to get to where you are as well. If not, then please share your secrets because I'm tired of grinding.

I do sell things on the bazaar now and again, and I have my friends wear my things as well. So that helps a little. And i've relocated to see if i can find a place for my business somewhere else. it'll take a bit of time to set up though.

Wish me luck... I'll make Master Tailor yet.

Ayane! It's Ellithra from beta if you remember me. I'm sorry we lost touch at the end of beta. I really wish I could have helped set up that PA hall for you.

And yap, I admit that I try to stay with the rest of the tailoring competition by grinding out items with whatever resources I have left at the end of the day. I try to sell what I can--some days are good, some days are bad.The nextmorning I visit my harvesters, stock up on resources, and start the day with a clean slate. Last week I was able to charge reasonable prices for novice tailor items like smocks, sleeveless dresses, and military packs, but now it's hard to even find a market for them. What a difference a week makes, huh?

As much as I'd love to play this class with no grinding at all, I think I've accepted it as part of the leveling routine. Just like marksmen have to kill thousands of rats and small woodland creatures to level up, we're forced to practice our skills on items that people will never use. My big wish is that the experience gained from other people using our items would be enough to encourage tailors to seek out customers instead of grinding. Even with all the sets of clothes I've crafted for other people, I can barely notice any experience being returned.

Oh yes, I remember you. How have you been? Quite well from the looks of it. And don’t worry about the PA hall thing… while we would have loved to try it I think that in all honesty we weren’t ready for it yet anyway.

As for selling items on the bazaar… I’ve currently got 25 items on there (can’t seem to put any more on it) and some dozen more already waiting in my bank to be put on. I’ll see tonight how many of them I’ve sold, but I fear the worst. There just isn’t much of a market for clothes anymore it seems.

Or maybe I’m charging too much. I’m asking about 500 credits per item (which I thought was pretty low, considering I sell only a couple each day), but maybe that’s too much? Maybe I should just put everything up for 20 credits (bazaar postage price) and hope people pick them up so I get some UXP. I’m making the items anyway, so profit isn’t really on my mind.

I still say they should implement measures to slow down grinding (diminishing return on XP for crafting the same item multiple times per day) and decrease the experience requirements greatly.

I’ve been a novice tailor for almost a week now, playing several hours each day and very long during the weekend and I’m not even halfway up to my first skill box yet. And the experience requirements only increase as you get higher. This way it’s going to take me months to master just one branch, let alone master the entire tree… and I’m not certain if I can stomach it that long. And the sad thing is… I liked the advancement rate we had during beta… that felt just right to me.

Oh well, for now I’ll hang in there hoping that the devs’ll see the light of day. But right now I greatly fear that the fact that just about everyone is grinding will so greatly skew their numbers that it’ll only get worse. I mean, taking the mean only works if only a small number of people grind. But it sounds to me like only a few don’t.

And clothing needs to start decaying… and fast too.

Use a factory. I have it make components and I sit around it making stuff. Get xp from both things. I have a house with a merchant in it so everything I make gets put in the vendor. It's working out great so far for me. I got both things at field wear1. The only part I had trouble withwas the initial grind from novice to the first box of field wear. People always wanted DA stuff whichdoes not give tailor xp.
