Thread: tailors do not deserve to earn the same as other professions
I finally made Master Tailor, this week.
I have done much research on prices on my server between the well known Tailors and a few up and comings. I have taken the high end and low end and come out somewhere in the middle, which is ironically about where I started.
For those of you that say these low, rediculous prices don't matter or hurt anyone; I am a new Tailor here to tell you that YES.. they DO! Personally, I will sell a few infiltrator suits at 3k on the bazaar when I need a kick to my income but that is it.. oh and a spec-ops pack or two for 3k. I am so offended when I see a Master Level item on the bazaar for 2K!!! 2k! It's still on there now.. ugh. I refuse to buy items made by another tailor and resale it. They do not need me to advertise for them, at least that's how I see it.
I have had too many people send me /tells or come to me wanting X for $$... you know, a tactical skinsuit for 3k. LMAO. I have now just taken to telling them that I can not do that for them and they might want to shop around for a tailor that will. Heck, if they want to keep selling their stuff for prices you coudlnt even keep your house paid with, let them deal with the customers they generate. I am happier not to haggle, I just wont do it. Eventually, they will have all of the creepy customers that just want to argue, while I am sitting with a smile making a Tactical suit for 8k. Sure, this hurts a bit for now, but in the long run, I will be known as a kind tailor who will take all the time in the world to make sure you are getting what you want, and not the cheep tailor who has to get to the next customer to make any profit at all.
My 2creds... Zahr'Ina Rasputo, Eclipse, Naboo

Okay, I admit I am one of the guys selling at lower prices not cut throat mind you, but lower. Here is my reasoning. At first I lowered prices because some folks were out of control on Kettemoor. Some masters were selling dresses for like 10000 each and shoes for 1000. That is a little too high in an economy that is struggling to stay afloat.
Economy that is struggling to stay afloat? Are you joking? I can make approximately 30k/hour running survey missions. Even with limited combat skills I can make almost that much running combat missions. Yesterday I went to Endor and solo'd a 20k mission, with no elite combat skills. I can put down a small harvester (cost = 500cr) and make a profit on it of about 5k/day for doing nothing. These are just examples. Money flows in this game, everyone has it. There's no reason at all anyone should be cying the money blues.
One day when my server went down I spent 3 hours playing a brand new character on another server. By the time I had finished(once again, in only 3 hours)I had something like 5k in the bank, 3 harvesters, and had gained 2 boxes worth of skill points, that I paid for through the NPC's not by shouting in the street. Now please explain about this "struggling to stay afloat" thingy?
I've seen some ridiculours prices as well, it goes in both ways, robe of honor at 2k and some tier 1 item at 3k...
I sell in bazaar only what I sell for my vendor around 3k or less. And yes using my system para camos and some bikinis go for 3k, so I put them in bazaar from time to time, while most other master items go between 7k and 8800. I have time to restock my vendor everyday and sell around 30 items a day on my vendor, often less, so I think that my price is appropriate, because it suits me.
I sometimes use bazaar to get rid of the items I never seem to sell on my vendor, like some ugly grey/orange skinsuits that were made for a customer and never got sold after a month, but it's very rare, and I agree that undercutting other tailors and selling master items for 2k is stupid, but I also think that those people will get bored fast at this rate.
I don't really look at the prices of other tailors, most of the ones I have seen around me sell for more in average, less for some items, but in bazaar I always end up selling what I put no matter the price.
My tailor shop is a stones throw from Theed, Naboo on Flurry. Competition is pretty cutthroat on the bazaar but I look at the stuff that they are trying to sell and most is pretty bad. The colors are a bad choice or they just picked out the original color because they are grinding and wanted to throw some on there to pick up alittle spare change. The things like Gunmans Dusters for 200 credits are usually drops in ugly colors and half worn out. Being half worm out though only means something if you have decay.
I still do a pretty good business but there are customers that bought everything that they could possibly want, like some of the entertainer ladies and they probably won't be back. I think what holds it together for us is new faces. Players become disenchanted with the game and leave and new ones come on. The new ones eventually want to look good. I can't count the guys that said, "I want to look cool but I don't know what I want!" That leaves me with absolutely no idea what to start with. One guy kept buying stuff off of the vendors only to sell it back to me because he didn't think it looked good on him.
All in all, business is hard for the tailor now on my server. I know that there are ones that were novice tailors that became disenchanted with the whole thing and went onto something else because the economy for a tailor is not a healthy one at this time.
I'm a entertainer/tailor in fact I'm two skills away from master tailor. Right now my highest price clothing is 3k (cloaks, dusters and such) I have no havesters, my lots are taken up with a PA hall and wearables factory. But between my mates and the crafting missions I think I do darn well.
I had a suggestion placed to me the other day from my brother you take you high end items and put them on the bazaar for 3k on auction set up for the maximum time limit that way people know you can make the item and if you put in your vendor location they can come out and see what you have on your vendor instead of waiting almost 7days to win the auction.
Wow, did I ever miss the point. ![]()
Everyone is talking about master tailors sellinghigh level stuff for cheap right? Well, I guess you could say a novice has just as much chance of making money as a master. The only difference between a master tailor and a novice tailor is the master's access to more colors and more clothes to make right? Neither's clothes are actually "better", it just depends on what shade of colorthe customer is looking for. It's not like a master weaponsmith, who's weapons do more damage, shoot faster, etc than a novice's do. Clothes are clothes, they just look different. I don't think a master tailor selling something for the same price as a novice selling something should hurt the novice's sales. If you sell on the bazaar or a vendor, people can't tell what your skill is anyway, right? They see something they like the look of and they buy it. I've just gotten to novice tailor and I don't plan on selling anything until I reach master, but that's just because I'd rather give the customer the full range of options from the tailoring tree to choose from. It's not like I'm going to be totally broke either, becauseI'm alsoan entertainer. ![]()
If I totally missed the point again, I apologize.
Something to keep in mind...
Master Tailors have a higher percentage chance of their socketed items having the maximum number of sockets available.
A brand new player, armed with a CDEF weapon, can complete five newbie missions and earn himself 2k credits. What do you want to see, everyone running around in their 2k credit tactical skinsuits, 1k spec-ops packs and dusters? On the contrary, level IV and Master items should be for people who are sacrificing a little time to *earn* those items.
You are doing other tailors a disservice if you greatly undercut their prices. I amon the high side for my level 3-4 creations, it takes *MY* time and money to craft those items.
Put clothing decay in, and people will NEED clothes again.
I still can't believe that everything from houses to weapons decay, but the Fleshwrap is indestructable.

You do whatever you can get get a trickle of business. Your volume of sales *WILL* drop. Yours costs related to your business *WILL NOT* drop. You'll have absolutely no buffer of money from charging market prices for items, and you won't be able to keep things going since when you need 10k in cash you won't be able to make it off selling 1 item, you'll STILL have to sell 10 items but the sales you seem so hard up to get now will only be less later.
Move your store, advertise more, give better customer service, do ANYTHING but charge insultingly and damagingly low prices for items to 'drum up business'. It's the absolute worst thing you can do to yourself.
Uhm... Kylania... if I do 2 delivery missions, I make 2000 credits. So for every run I make, I get 4000 credits. I make 2 runs and I have up to 10,000 credits. There is no need to inflate prices.
Tailor is not a profession for those who want to grub on money. I play it more as an art than a "steal your money" sort of thing.
P.S. - Please avoid telling me that "my business will fail" and my "sales will drop." I make 10-20 sales a day. You can accuse me of failing all you want, but I have a steady flow of money.
Just because I don't stockpile 1,000,000 credits doesn't mean I'm the poorest sod in the galaxy.
