Thread: Hey tailor, make me some boots and oh, will you be charging me?

Okay, this actually happened to me last night. This guy wanted boots and then asked if I charged for them. He wasn't asking for a price, he wanted to get them for free. I was thinking that that was a dumb question. Of course, I was going to charge him. When I mentioned that I was going to charge, he decided his boots were just fine ( I hadn't quoted him a price yet). Five minutes, later I saw another tailor making the boots for him. For free, perhaps?

So that got me thinking? Are other tailors making custom made clothes for free? I can understand giving your friends clothes but complete strangers? I can even understand telling someone to give what they think is fair but are you still making the clothes when you know they don't intend to pay? Resources cost credits and your time needs to be valued. I sure hope you other tailors aren't just giving away clothes. That just wrecks it for the rest of us.

I 'sell' nothing for free.. the only time I give things away is in return for resources. And I don't just mean enough resources to make the item - I'll trade resources at market price - for example, if you give me 1000 fiberplast, I'll make you a piece of clothing I normally charge 3k for.

That's one of the issues in this game. They give it away for free for the UXP.

To be honest, I wonder if a lot of this isn't armorers who just want to get tailoring to build components and don't care about the trade. I've gotten several "how do I skill up fast" requests and they are always from armorers.

I charge 800 for hide boots on Ahazi, and they move fast. What do others charge?

I personally like resource trade.. as in give me more than enough resources, and I'll make you your stuff..

Had a guy who wanted some bone pieces to his armor. Gloves, Bracers, Helmet.. that was it.

He gave me so much bone, hide and meat from hunting that I couldhave made 6 sets of armor.

He said it was no problem, I could make it and sell the rest (which I did a bit of, but ran out of time).

I will give out 'simple' stuff like shirts and pants to 'naked' people, saying if you want better, e-mail me.... But it's only stuff that 'any' artisan with Dom Art II or III could make. I do that for marketing/repeat business.

Any requests get charged.. That's like going into the hospital, waiting for someone to heal you and then leaving... If you show up looking for something, PAY for it..

I've reached the point there I'll make entire outfits for people for free. Two reasons.

1. UXP

2. My sanity.

I desperately need XP and I desperately need the ability to make things that people want. Currently the uber PA/Powergamer crafters can make all of that, they are rolling in money and rolling in resources. I'm so broke I have to run missons just to afford my few harvesters that I don't even have time to talior. Meanwhile uber PA/Powergamer crafters have fields of harvesters for their use.

Secondly I make it for free since I was about to waste it all on ribbed shirts no one will buy, so since I was gonna lose the resouces anyway, why not make varied things instead of spamming out ribbed shirts endlessly. At least I might make a buck or two from tips. Selling on the bazaar is so flooded and iffy that it's almost not worth it. Heck, I even made the horrible mistake of training Business III to get "premium auctions" something I later found out has NEVER worked. Sigh.

So yeah, I'll make anything I can for anyone for any amount they want to pay. I was gonna throw it all away, might as well have some fun while grinding I guess. At least I'm not putting it up on the bazaar for hundreds less driving the prices there down.

So charging hundreds less to move something is worse then giving it for free how? Last time I checked if the normal price for something is 500 and you sell it for 200 less that is a hell of a lot better then giving the 500 credit item away for free.

This has always been my one beef with UXP. People giving stuff away for free. I will not charge for some things but that's only if they give me all the resources used to make it times 4.

Few people handing items out for free isn't remotely as worse as people putting up items ubercheap on the bazaar, because in latter case you've 20 items at lets say 500cr and 7 at 200cr.Other crafters see that and will put up their stuff also at 200cr, which starts pushing the price down, unless you got someone that has still enough space in the My Sales list and resells the stuff for higher prices.

When I still sold plain hide boots, I sold them for 450 credits. They never sat on the market for more than a day. I don't sell artisan stuff anymore. I leave that for people who still need the skill so that they can have some of the market share.

This stuff happened to me too last night.

A dancer wanted me to make her a sleeveless dress and a pair of workman gloves of matching color for her.

So i ran all the way from the cantina to the crafting stations, built it up, came running back there and offered it to her. She gave me 200 credits and said it was more than enough for it (the sleeveless robe took 3 synth panels and a metal fastener along with some fiberplast...i think). So i asked if she could give me more, i sugested 1000 credits (hey, give me a break, i don't know prices yet) and she starts insulting me and hounding all my future clients saying not to buy from me that i was a 'crack pot' and that i 'overcharged' so i had a very bad night. I tried explaining myself to her and her only reply was that she putted me on her ignore list.

I'm seeing red, some tailor walks in, she does some kinky emotes, he makes her the exact same dress and gloves for FREE.

I PM the tailor asking him why he did that and he said that he always made clothes to entertainers for free. Am i the only one thinking that making stuff for free to our #1 clients is not a good way to survive?

Is it just me or is the tailor profession just one big charity case where people pay you 'if they feel like it' and that if you don't give it to them, some other tailor will just waltz in and make it to them for free?

Now i don't know how much i should charge, i'm scared of overcharging and getting cussed out of town or undercharging and getting screwed.

Another reason why i'm taking a secondary profession other than tailor, i'd lose my harvesters and my house if i didint....
