Thread: On melee and ranged defense skills...
Being mainly a crafter I am still learning a bit about the combat skills in this game. I heard somewhere that the melee and ranged defense skills don't actually "do" anything, was just curious if this could be confirmed, dneied, or at least debated if noone is really sure.
Thanks in Advance
My second question would be do these defensive modifiers stack from different professions. For instance, if you are a swordsmand, and a dueler, will the melee/ranged defensive mods from both trees be used when you are wielding just one type of weapon. I'm fairly certain it will be displayed as such in the box where your skills are totalled, however I was wondering if it actually functioned this way.
Again thanks in advance for any help
They work, but noone know how it really help. Yes, higher defense will lower the chance someone hits you.
Some time ago someone tryed to test it on brawler board. His conclusion was that your enemy get -1% to hit for every 2 defense. However, its not really clear.

Well, things like dodge, defense vs. knockdown, etc., definitely don't do anything.
Now, the 'melee defense' and 'ranged defense' skills are supposed to be more generic and act as modifiers to to-hit chance. I don't know if they work or not.
Excuse me but how do you know they don't do anything? Unless you are a DEV in disguise, have read a post by a DEV, or know a DEV who tells you these things, you don't. Clearly dodge has been coded, mobs do it. Just because you don't receive a message that tells youthat youdodged, or resisted the knockdown dosn't necessarily mean you didn't.
I think we are making too many assumptions about what the game engine is doing. Gorecki, maybe we should add to our list:
* Improve combat notifications to include indications of when our defenses worked.
For example:
A giant worrt swings at you but misses.
You dodge the attack! (Also include a little notification over the head of the dodger +Dodge+)
We could use notifications for: Dodge, all Defense vs. Skill tests, and counterattack. Can anyone else think of another defense that might be going unreported. Asking the DEVs to show thesenotifications will force their hand as to whether or not they are coded.

Thanks for the info Micos, that was exactly what i was looking for, even if it is only a secondhand account of testing, that's good enough for me to know people have tested it at least. I was aware of toughness being applied to the weapon type you use only, but thanks for adding that anyway as it may help other young swordmen understand the profession.
