I have a feeling it's like this: state defence for pvp, melee defence for pve?

I agreed with that unless you are willing to build a pure defence stacker as swordsman.
Brawler 4/4/4/0, MasterSwordsman, Fencer4/4/4/0,TK 0/3/0/4, Marksman 0/4/0/0, Pistoleer 0/0/4/0 You can have all that for 249 SP.
Don´t like that template...first no medic or mediation(tka) skills and second def. vs stats capped at +90 and melee + ranged def. at +125. u waste some skillspoints. and without master-brawler a swordsman is only half good ashe can be with it...

Not 100% sure about it...afaik the devs said that there is allways a 10% chance to land a state...and so the cap must +90%....to be honest...capped stats are not a guarantee for killing opponents in pvp nor high end mobs in pve....afaik u will loose most of the times doing pvp against ppl. who knows what there are doing...cause u have no medic skills to heal yourself and miss the goodies from master brawler...for sure u can solo a single spellweaver or other lesser ns...but havin some of them on u imo the lack of medic-skills will kill u for sure...being buffed is nothing when 5 stalkers are on u and 3 choking your a$$....u never ever think about droping medic-skills...using cob, intimidate2 and the ability to heal with stims are more worth than some higher def. vs. skills or melee/ranged defense...missing ranged migration is no big thingif u know how to catch them up...burst run..warcey2..switch to tka and kd...switch to swords and area3 for dizzy and after dizzy sticked lunge2...being on there a$$ spaming hh3....

Ican only share my experience...Havin medic skills safed many times my life....If u have no medic skills and fighting high end mobs a medic/doc has to focus on u the whole time cause within 3 or 4 hits u could be dead....Since the npcs got there specials back they can deal lots of damage....And afaik there is no way to prevent yourself from gettin hit by high end mobs...No melee defense or high def. vs. stats helps with that....Before i made this template i was master fencer/sword/pistoleer 1043 and nov. medic. Had tons of defense with this template and got as many hits as i get now with my current template...i never dodged an ns while fighting them with gafi-stick....had +130 dodge and eating air cake for extra dodge...so all i can say is: don´t trust in "defense skills"when fighting high end mobs...u can trust only5 things: dealing high amount of damage in short periode of time, CoB, Intimidate(2), WarCry(2)and healing abilities...
just my2cents
