Nah, it would be better than a lightsaber.

I seem to recall from Phantom Menace I played on Playstation a while back, there was one boss with a sort of a long axe thing, only it had a fork on the end with some sort of an energy beam. Think like axe on a long shaft, but without the actual blade. It was as if someone crammed a lightdagger on top a long pole. So I guess energy melee weapons other than lightsabers were envisioned in Star Wars world?

In fact, a bit of trivia, Lucas originally intended for lightsabers to be a common weapon... the famous boarding of Princess Leia's blockade runner was to include a lot of vaderish soldiers duking it out with rebels in all out lighsaber melee... only later during the filmmaking was it decided to keep the weapon Jedi-only.
