Umm who uses specials unbuffed?
I do.
But I have defenses from TKA to keep me alive along with Master Medic, I have BE clothing, I am eating and drinking powerful and varied concoctions, and I am not wearing high-encumberance armor. It also helps if you are a Wookiee in this one case.

A utter newbie to the high end of combat proffessions. I'm 1/4/4/3 heavyswords,Medic 3/3/4/3 .
I finally splashed out on a new set of 80% kinetic compo, migrated my stats to a utter shadow of their former selves in order to wear it,and went hunting.
Buffed..things are very rosey. No problems at all.
Unbuffed......Things just seem to get worse and worse the higher i get.
Spamming headhit3 will just kill me in seconds.
My HAM is 640/640/640 ish. My hammer is a standard bazzar one and my scythe seems pretty ordinary.
Is this a problem all heavyswords have or have i migrated my stats wrong?
I have to hit heal evry 3 seconds to keep my head above water.
Thanks for your advice.
Unlike when you are buffed, you have to pay close attention to how much HAM it costs to use a special. Remember that the second stat on each color determines how much HAM cost a special will use. If your armor encumberance is putting your strength down to 50, for example, it is going to cost significantly more to use a special than if your strength is at 600. You don't spam specials unbuffed, you coordinate them.
Don't be afraid to look for or special order a Power Hammerthat sacrifices a bit of damage forvery low range modifiers. I just bought some with -6 -8 -8, instead of the pretty standard -31 -31 -31. And it is only about 8 points difference in damage, so when I get them sliced the only difference I will note is how much more often I land a blow.Accuracy and rangeis important, because since you can't just spam specials, every single blow counts. Accuracy and speed becomemore important than 10 or 15 points of damage on the max damage range. And I think the Scythe is right out when you are unbuffed. You will kill yourself with it. Oh, and examine the creatures you are fighting. Fight creatures with low blast damage resistance. Get a low HAM curved sword just in case Kinetic is better, but be ready to flee.
If you are using a Power Hammer, Won Won is your friend. Synthsteak is awesome. In some cases, it is like a very powerful armor because as long as it is in your system, it always works against any kind of damage or armor piercing. Vasarian Brandy is also good because you can keep your mind healthy for healing yourself. Have plenty of stimpacks ready. You will have more downtime unbuffed than buffed. Your stomach is going to be a factor here, so get the food that lasts a long time, so while it is in use your food bars are regenerating.
Intimidate, intimidate, intimidate. Get items of clothing that provide indimidation / warcry bonuses, as well as ones that provide melee defense bonuses. These are Bio-Engineered, so they should be easy enough to find, unlike SEA's.
To killunbuffed, you have to ride a very fine line, and itmight take you a while to find a good combination of the right armor, the right stat migration, and the right combination of food. It takes preparation and discipline. But sometimes it is a heck of a lot more thrilling.
