Well, the meditation and defense lines are definately worthwhile to pick up as a swordsman, especially the meditation line.

Here is my template:

Master Swordsman
Master Brawler
Master TKA (working on this last part)
Fencer 4000
Medic 3000

Lots of ranged/melee defence, powerboost, meditate, lunge2/warcry2/intim2, very strong offensively.

Mostof these multiple melee combos will be relatively useless when they nerf stacking defense mods (which they're almost definitely going to do). Personally, I think the best compliment to swordsman is either Carbine for ranged knockdown, Doctor for buffs, or ranger so you can slap on some camo and run right into the middle of an NPCcamp without being attacked first, then let fly with the AoE's
