Personally, I didn't find swordsman-rifleman to be a very good mix. The reason everyone goes Rifle/Sword is because they both do mind damage, but the real issue is they're just totally different combat styles. I think it makes sense to get a little bit of sword IF you're a rifleman, just in case you have to melee.

However, if you're planning on being primarily melee going with rifle is a waste of time. Rifle just has to start out from such extreme range, and it's not good for closing because as you get closer you get really bad penalties. With the Spraystick or SG82 you can do "ok" but not great.

In my opinion Carbineer is a better choice because, although you can't do mind damage, you can get an array of weapons that can be used from fairly long range (Laser Carb) or closer range as you charge (DXR6/EE3). Pistoleer could also work, but I feel it's a little bit redundant. The ideal range of the close range Carbines is 20, and with Pistol it's sometimes 0, but at 0 you'll already have your sword out anyway.

Maybe it's my playing style but I just don't feel like rifle is a very good combo with sword, even though sword is a good backup for a rifleman. As it is, we can't use our styles anyway (due to high HAM costs), so most of the time we just hit random pools. And, for that any weapon type will do.

Not to mention mind damage is a major liability because if you run out of health/action to do styles, you're never going to get a mind hit again (or just very rarely) and you'll basically have to start from scratch if you haven't done any other sort of damage.
