Thread: Counterattack Question.

I am wanting to get the defense tree in TKA to go with Master Swordsman but I have heard that counterattack only works when melee or ranged defenses fail.

First off I would like to ask if this is true, and second I want to ask why.
I thought melee and ranged defense basically meant that you took less dmg of that type, thus Defense, and if that is true how does it "fail" and if it does how often? I also noticed that that tree in tka gives a bonus to the chance of 2nd mods like counterattack being successful...is this enough to counter act the melee and ranged defenses you get making the combo stronger than not having it?

I would also like to ask what EXACTLY does counterattack do...I am pretty sure I know but I don't want to be thinking up a good combo and not be 100% sure.


Lastly...do you think the ranged/defense tree in tka is a good idea/combo to put it with swordsman? I am having other things as well like the meditation tree and doctor buff/med use tree but I want an opinion if you think that the melee/ranged defense tree of tka will make my character stronger or weaker because of that counterattack thing, if true.

I think it is broken. I get the "you counterattack" message all the time.


But I dont attack at all.

ranged and melee defense make you harder to hit. think of it as lowering the accuracy of your opponent.


dodge/block/counterattack turn a HIT into a MISS (excepting bleeds and some state effects).


dodge/block/counter take care of what gets through ranged and melee defense.


for melee attacks, toughness further reduces damage (and mitigation reduces the range of damage).

If what you say is accurate then the Devs need to go back to school and take a few English classes.


You can "Counter the attack" by making dodging moves so that the attack does not hit you.


However, if you "Counterattack" you WILL return an attack back on your aggressor.


If counterattack in this game is nothing more than making an opponent miss you, then the Devs need to stick the word "the" between "counter" and "attack".

Ah...ok..and yes I agree with you Knocky.


Thanks for the info but one more question...That being said having good melee/ranged defenses won't hurt me, only help me because the opponent would have to get past the melee/ranged defenses and if he/she did then he/she would have to get past the counterattack mod right?

Counterattack is supposed to be a "counterattack" which returns unblockable damage. We get an effect, but it does not do this.Right now, it just acts like a dodge as far as I can tell. It says, "[attacker] hits you for xxx damage, but you shrug it off and counterattack" or something like that.You do not see any associated damage returned (i.e., no "You counter attack for xxx damage" message). How it is supposed to work is anybody's guess, but I suspect it is supposed to give you one free normal attack against your opponent. It just does not seem to do that.

I'm a master swordsman 0040 carbineer. I have 190 counter attack but I notice I get hit a lot more when I have my vk's equiped. I still counter but not as much as when I'm holding a p-hammer or sword.

maybe im reading the wrong stuff from my combat window but i seem to be attacking after it says you shurg it off and counterattack



no they dons always hit due to our low accuracy. im pretty sure we are getting extra attacks since when i have cob on i seem to attack a whole lot more. maybe its my imagination, but thats what i see and im stickin too it

I've also picked up some carbine skills to test out how well counterattack works. I tested it a bit with duels against friends where I would stand in one spot and let them attack me. What it seems to do when you counterattack is make the opponent miss and have you return a normal attack, with a two handed weapon equipped I countered quite often but did not see any damage delivered on my opponents, I did not however pay attention to the range, if they were over 5 meters away that could very well be the reason(I'll have to test that again). With a carbine equipped the range is increased and damage from the counterattacks is pretty easily seen.

WEll bad news for those of us who took carbineer for counterattack... its getting capped at 125 in publish 7 (thats the rumor) no more 190's or 215 (if your a master carbineer)

So now what?
well im dropping carbines and going riffles for the Melee defense... but im sure that soon as i finish thats getting nerfed too... but i should be used to it im a carear swordsman.

and im stickin to it.
