Personally i look at the damage per second. (there should be a calc to figure that out, stickyed here.)

While grinding, I personaly prefer speed. You will miss a lot more, so faster speed means you can get to that next attack that much quicker.

At novice, stick with a 2h curved sword, up through the tech line (x4xx).

Then switch to a scythe, if you have the combat xp line (xxx3).

If not, go with a speed sliced Power Hammer.

Switch to a damage sliced PH, when your 2-handed weaponspeed is around +87 or higher, only then will it benefit you. (or it must be an 800+ damage Ph, then you can use it at +84 speed). For the rest just use a 33%+ speed sliced PH (3.5 or lower speed) and use speed PuP's to get speed capped (or close to). It is all about damage/second, not the max damage per hit.
