does it stack with effectiveness? And also would taking defense acuity (tk combat xp line) help it work?

dont bother, after the combat revamp defences will not stack... you must be holding a weapon of that proffesion to get its abilities. meaning since your holding a swordman weapon, carbineer defences wont stack.... yes i know, its bad for swordsman, we are known for soloing high end enemies.
