It's working as intended apparently. While you only get the message after you gain more experience after dropping the skills, as far as the game is concerned you lose the XP as soon as you surrender the skill.

In my experience, the issue is not losing XP after surrendering the skill, its when you take the second box while re-gaining it. As far as I've been able to figure it out, the game "notices" you've lowered your cap when you take the first box, and then the next time you try and add a skill, you'll lose the vast majority of your points.

Yeah, there's a cap on exp, which increases as you get more skills, that much you know. Of course, that cap goes down when you surrender skills. It just doesn't refresh until you gain them again. Yes, it would be nice if it was clearer. I have no problem with experience not being saved to prevent profession swapping, but it should be lost when you surrender the skill.

So like many people, I fell prey to the "Holo Grind" and gave up Master Swordsman. Now I'm rather fed up withthe grindand wanted to go back to Swordsman.
During my Holo Grinding, I never ONCE even equipped a 2H weapon, let alone used it! Only now that I've decided to go back to Swordsman, I find the 900K 2H experience I had is GONE!
Is this typical? I thought you only lost xp if you GAINED some of the same kind? Is this worthy of a customer service ticket, or will I get the finger?

You havea max XP for each thing, rifle xp two handed xp etc etc
The max XP depends on what you need to level up the skills that recquire

The max XP depends on what you need to level up the skills that require that xp, such as when you are a scout, this happened to me recently. was scout 4/4/3/4 and the most scouting XP it would let me have was twice what I needed to become 4/4/4/4, or 30000xp. If I dropped skills I lost xp as it seemed to keep my xp in line with double what I needed for the next skill rank, maybe that was just me though

Yep, when you give up a skill you're lowered to the cap for whatever the highest level skill that you have left in that profession. For instance if you have 900k xp and give up all the way down to novice brawler, when you learn 2 handed 1 you'll end up with 10000 or so xp, since that is your cap while you're working on 2 handed 2. The game just doesn't make a check to lower your accumulated xp until after you learn a skill that uses that type of xp. This is working as intended, sorry to say
I believe that you can give up all but any one 4th level skill of a profession and maintain your 900k, since that should be the cap for xp once you are 4-0-0-0 for instance. As long as you keep at least 1 top tier skill box, your cap stays at 900k.

Thanks for all the feedback. I suspected that the experience was removed, but not actually showing as removed. Still, it is a little dissappointing to suddenly discover that I'm another 900k behind in Swordsman. ![]()
On the upside, due to some other skills I have, I managed to hang on to a good chunk of Combat XP. Also my second go around on the Swordsman tree is going much faster this time! Having good armor, weapons, and the ability to buff oneself is quite handy.
After my first night back in the saddle, I'm a Novice again and I have the first two Finesse boxes. yeah! ![]()
