Hello. I am not a frequent poster to this particular forum, but I was wondering if my fellow swordsmen could give me some advice?
I am currently an almost speed-capped swordsman and a speed-cappedrifleman. Needless to say, I can do some nice damage, but I havevery little in the way of defenses. I have been speed-capped in rifles for a while now, but ever since NS's started using their force powers again, I have a hard time with them. Now, as I am getting closer to being capped in swords, I am thinking of dropping rifles altogether and stacking some defenses with swords.
This toon will primarily be used for crystal and pearl hunting and some PvP, a lot of which will be against Jedi I think. Should I droprifles for defenses? And if so, which defenses should I pick up? Focus on melee/ranged def or state def or a balance of each?
I'd love to see some template examples. Thanks in advance and sorry if this is a common question... the search function keeps telling me that there are too many searches on progress, so I can't search for similar threads.

Hmm here's my suggestion for a template to do the stuff you've mentioned:
Masterswords
Pike: x-x-4-x
Fencer: 4-x-x-x
Tka: x-x-x-4
Medic: 4-3-4-x
With this you would have the best melee defence of 166 (You are capped at 125)
Def vs. knockdown 45
Def stun: 70
Ranged defence: 139 (capped at 125) keeps those gank squads that a jedi has with riffelmen down to a minimum of hits they get in...
This way you can basically hunt everything you want: be it jedi or krayts, and the ability to cure bleeds and use stims will get you a very long way!
Now be aware the the cu is supposed to change some the stacking but until that one hits you are all good. I for one wouldnt like to pick a fight against someone with these skills

tk 2404
fencer 4440
pike 0040
medic 2000
I think you'll have some skill points left over. Put them into either pharm if you can get pharm 4 or diagnostics if you can't get pharm 4

Thank you guys for the responses.
So you think that the defenses from stacking would do me more good than the damage output and variety of damage types I get from being a rifleman?

Oh, and one thing I forgot to mention... I have to stay Master Brawler as well to be speed capped in Swords. I can't afford to buy those 5 speed points so I have to tie up the skill points to get them.

Your current template gives you a good mix of variety of how you kill the high end mobs.
Beign of the old school template myself: msword/mdoc, I find that if I would be anything else it would be mriffel/mdoc. I dont see the point in haveing a template that contains 2 of the 3 largestdamage pve dealers in the game.
But as you stated you wanted to kill high end mobs and be able to do a bit of pvp mostly against jedi's, what your current template shows is that you lack defences, to get these you need to sacrifice one of the master titels.
So ive dabeld a bit to give a suggestion as to a template that includes the mbrawler:
Msword
Mbrawler
Fencer: 4-4-4-x
Tka: 4-x-x-4
Pike: x-x-4-x
Youll be capped in both melee defence and ranged defence, and you get the ultra cool meditative line of tka, which is if not the coolest then closest to the coolest thing to have in any profession. Best thing is you still have 8 sp left to spend on forinstance fs melee speed tree and accuracy. Now this is a fighting machine of magnitude.
The defences will do you quite well in any type of combat be it pvp or pve. So basically you exchange energy for blast, not a bad choice imho.

This is right along the lines of what I am thinking of doing, but I'll probably want to do some tweaking to get a bit of healing, and I will want 3 points for FS Melee speed. But it sounds like the general consensus is that if I am speed-capped with Swords, then rifles is redundant and I could better use those points on defense.
As far as defense stacking goes, when I am making compromises would it be better to pick up more state defenses or more melee/ranged defenses?

What do you all think of this template?
Master Swords
Master Brawler
4/3/0/4 TKA
2/4/4/0 Fencer
0/1/0/0 Medic
4 pts to the FS Melee speed line
Gives:
+129 Melee Def
+107 Ranged Def (+10 from Aakuan rings and 3 from Lightweight Backpack= +120)
+60 Def Vs. Blind
+65 Def Vs.Dizzy
+40 Def Vs. Intimidate
+95 Def Vs. Knockdown
+90 Def Vs. Posture Change
+65 Def Vs. Stun
This also lets me easily be speed capped since I will have +80 speed and +13 enhanced melee speed. I can just use my +2 belt and sell my speed shirt.
Besides the low healing capability, what are the other weaknesses to this template? And are those defenses effective?

Check out the stickied Speed cap FAQ you might find this useful: http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=swordsman&message.id=49852
Specifically:
To cap speed you need +95 speed, aAcklay Powerhammer (slowest hammeryou will find)is usually 6.1sp and caps at +95. The actual speed cap is +100 but that is only needed if you find a weapon that is 10.0speed (doesnt happen).
[and]
Master Swordsman / FS Speed ..... +8 speed needed in attachments
Master Swordsman / Master Brawler / FS Speed ..... +3 speed needed in attachments
It depends on what speed bonus you are getting from your shirt, but if you are able to get to +8 with shirt + belt then you could drop Brawler to pick up more healing or state defs. And if you're going to sell an item you might consider the belt first so you can equip a stun PSG, that is if you are interested in fight nightsisters also.

Hmm you need more medic because when an elder throws a bleed on you then you cant heal it so i would recommend medic 2000 at least if not more

0440 fencer
2000 medic
4400 enhanced reflexes
whoever posted before is right though you want first aid 2 for elder bleeds for sure

I have and love mbrawler, tkm, mswords fencer 1400 medic 2100. you wont have alot of troubles vs anything pvm anyway.
you get decent knockdown prot, you get nice posture change prot, you get nice stun prot, low dizzy but cares if you dont get knocked down anyway.

I'll try to tweak things around to get First Aid.
It sounds like the defenses are worth getting though. Thanks for all the responses.
