Thread: Quit Complaining about not being equal.
I get tired of reading posts where people compare Swordsman to Commandos and such and feel the other class should be nerfed because they do more damage. I personally love being a swordsman...it is a great compliment class to being a rifleman and I still have points to put into other things. I use the sword to finish off what my rifle doesn't kill and I love taking on large groups of Gurrcats and such because I can usually take one or two out before they whole group comes running and then I pull out my trusty sword and kill the 4 or 5 that are around me in a couple of hits.
I was thinking of becoming a Bounty Hunter, but realized that I would have to drop Swordman to do it. For Bounty Hunters who want to Master Bounty hunter then ultimately the options are limited as to having side classes besides the Scout and Marksman. Good thing they rock because they get a big disadvantage by not being able to go up in only part of a skill tree of something..unless that involves a breakoff of Marksman or Scout, because the point cost doesn't make it worth it to start up the basic professions.
So for those Swordsmen that complain about not doing enough damage. Diversify and quit complaining. You can be a Swordsman and a Rifleman, pistoleer etc and even add something else. For those who only want to be swordsman I would ask what are you spending all of your other points on? If it happens to be a non-combat class then don't complain about not being great in all combat areas. Commando's spend a healthy amount of points and experience to get what they have. I would feel it unfair if they took it away from them. In fact most Swordman could become a Commando as well if they wanted... nasty combo indeed!
And for those that want to know.. I am love being able to nearly drop something with a couple of mindshots with my rifle and then pull out my sword and one shot them when they come running up to me.
Amulon, if the rifle doesn't finish you.. trust me, my sword will!
I started going up the polearm branch of brawler. Then I realized that being a Wookie, some day I would want a Bowcaster. Like you said --- rifle and sword just seem to work better together. The only thing I miss from polearm is the stun, which I like better than our sweep. I ended up getting enough of unarmed to have the stun from that branch. So now when the mob gets close, I stun him with my fists and then pull out the trusty sword.
By the way, my 2H curved sword is SO much better than my lance ever was. Speed went from 4.4 to 2.5 and the low end damage went up form 25 to 62. Hi end went up from 242 to 250. I am REALLY having fun with this sword :>)

Melee's don't want to be equal, they want equal opportunities. It's a common misconception that you've made, one that has been made by many people in evaluating civil rights issues. I have not seen any posts that say: I want to do more damage than a commando. I have seen posts, for example, that say: what is our role if a commando can use a flamethrower to deal more damage than us in a close quarters fight? That is valid.
It is not that we want to be equal in all ways: that's not the point at all. We want to have an equal opportunity to excel in some niche -- whatever that may be. The current system does not really allow for that. I would argue that our only real advantage is melee toughness and just isn't enough. Other than that other classes do deal more damage than us in close quarters. People are against not because, "OMG, we're not equal", but because it would seem that being good at dealing damage up-close is intended to be our specialty and we're not able to excel in that area.
So, don't rail against an argument that doesn't exist. Melee classes are miffed by their lack of any defining role where they truly excelled -- and correctly so.

What Gabriel said.
If our defining role is supposed to be melee damage, and commandos do that better than us, then what is our defining role?
I don't necessarily care what it is, as long as there is one. Tanking? CH pets do it better. State changes? TKA's are better for that. Defense skills? TKA's again. Mind pool damage? Riflemen and Bounty Hunters can do that from long range and mind pool damage isn't really meaningful in PvE.
Our niche doesn't necessarily have to be one of these things, but it should be something.
I find that most of the swordsman who start posts like this- and there have beena few in the last week or so are very low on the sword tree. Gurrcats? thats a level 10 critter... if you even bother with them then you can't be that high.
However once you have invested a huge amount in this profession you come to find that what you get is a very slim variety of mods, specials, and weapons compared to some of the other "damage dealers". The senior swordsman aren't whining that we're weak or unequaljust that we don't get alotof variety in our attacks as we progress.
We are very powerful.. in fact I was in a Tuscan Raid in the tunnels last night and after the first ten minutes me and another swordsman were running around protecting the healers and the half dead after killing almost everything in there. But the tunnles are a melee dream since its all close quarter melee.
If you read all of Gorecki's mostly unanswered emails to the Devs and all the other well thought outposts on our issues you'll get a better idea of what our wishes are.
All the same, I have no problems, if the devs would ungimp our class by taking away the knockdown timer for us, or give us a Lunge-style attack called Hamstring or something that slows people down so they can't run. But without it, I think we have a lot to complain about, honestly.
I don't understand why some people have such a hard time tanking. With my doctor buffs, and muon gold, I can out tank any CH pet alive.
To include gnarled rancors, and maulers, it's cake.
Try new things, don't stay with the stats SWG gave you, they suck.
people just dont understand how awesome this profession can be.

Heh. Muon Gold. Rancors don't have to take a 5 minute break every 10 minutes because their Muon Gold buff is on the downer and now their focus, willpower and mindpool suck.
It's funny. I have a Wrix. It has like 1300 HAM and hits for 130-140. I travel with a doctor who buffs it and we fight pickets on Dantooine.
If I end up tanking, I usually lose enough mind pool that I have to sit for about 30 seconds after the fight, and that's with 600 Willpower.
If the Wrix ends up tanking, after the fight I say "trick", it's back up to 100% mind pool and we can immediately pool another Picket. With me and the doctor, if I pull 3 pickets we're dead. Even though he warning shots the extras, I just don't have the mind pool to kill 3 in a row. With the Wrix tanking half the hits, we can do it. That extra 1300 mind pool he has is perfect.
Just imagine if I had a serious pet!
The fact is that once you start fighting higher level stuff, you can't compete with a Rancor's 18000 mind pool when it comes to tanking. You WILL get hit in the head, you WILL have downtime. The pets have no downtime, which makes them superior tanks.
And even downtime aside, when a picket gets lucky and it's "random pool" attacks hit you in the head 5 times in a row (it happens), you're going down and there's nothing anyone can do about it. A pet with even 5000 HAM would have had no problem in that situation.
Yep the inital poster is clueless. At the moment Im living with sword because of PVE. However, PVP, an entire aspect of the game, is out of my reach. When Im buffed on every stat and taking Muon Gold just to try run 300m to get to shelter and end up dieing before I get there after all that, then something is wrong. This from a low level BH.
I'm still waiting for the bone to be thrown to us..
Pull your mobs, get down to half mind pool, pop a muon. gives you 10 minutes of near godmode.
In that 10 minutes, i can make more xp, then you can make with whatever pet you have, hands down.
Btw, it's 2 minutes downtime, not 5.
