Thread: The Devs have confused skills with classes (relevant to swordman in particular)
Ok here is how I see it.
Being a Swordsman should NOT be a class.
Sword should be a SKILL relevant to certain classes.
The problem: The Devs didn't want classes.
The reality: By requiring pre-requisites and by imposing the 15 point Novice penalty, the Devs created classes, but called them skills.
Examples:
- Commando, for instance= Not a skill tree, but a class.
- Combat Medic: Not a Skill Tree, but a class.
- Bounty Hunter: Clearly a class
Now if you are a class, then all is well and good (as long as you don't try to get flexible).
But the Problem is that a Class shouldn't be defined exclusively by it's skills. A class should be defined by it's job. The Player should be able to pick what skills it wants to do that job.
A Squad Leader, for example, should be able to use a sword to do the job of a squad leader (or at least part of that job).
A Bounty Hunter, should be able to hunt bounties with a sword, if they so chose to do so.
A Combat Medic, should be able to specialize in close quarters action and use a sword.
Yet that is not the case. It is not the case because the Devs continue to insist that there are no classes, only skill trees. What we end up with is this mutant system of classes which pretend to be something else. And by pretending to be something else, the class system is defined purely by skill points. By defining each class PURELY by skill points the devs have totally destroyed any flexibility which a player might have in desiging their class.
I'd rather have classes and then be able to pick and chose my skills, rather than PRETENDING not to have classes, and in the process have certain skills and weapons rammed down my throat whether I wanted them or not.
I forgot the most obvious and ridiculous class of them all:
- Smuggler: In Smuggling 101 they FORCE you to use a pistol. If you don't use a Pistol, then you aren't a Smuggler.
Nothing demonstrates what I am talking about more than this example. A smuggler is not defined by his job, but rather by his skill with a pistol. By pretending that smuggling isn't a class tree, but rather a skill tree, the Dev's forced all Smugglers to be pistolero's. This is nonsense, and isn't even supported by the movies which clearly show smugglers and thugs using all sorts of weapons.
A verykeen observation.
I've never quite understood why someone who master several advanced combat skills, say a master carbineer, master pistoleer, master rifle, would be lessskilled at combat than a commando - not to mention the commando gets extra class abilities plus the benefits of their prereqs to boot.
Also, if they want to have elite classes for ranged, then they also need to have elite classes for melee.
TKA comes somewhat closer than the rest of melee- not only does it offer better defense (MUCH higher accuracy and toughness as well compared with the other melee professions),it also manages to squeeze in the meditation line - a unique and helpful skill that sets TKA apart.
Honestly, their entire approach to skill trees needs to be readjusted to be more fair. A character that spends 250 skill points on advanced combat skills (pistoleer, fencer, etc) *should* be a better fighter than someone that spends points on scout, points onmarksman, and then heads up bounty hunter. The bounty hunter has the benefit of their scout skills, plus their unique marksman skills - why do they do more damage as well?
All in all, skill based systems always seem to fall short in this regard.
Hopefully the devs will take a look at your post, take the critique to heart, and endeavor to make things a little more fun and balanced.
The bounty hunter has the benefit of their scout skills, plus their unique marksman skills - why do they do more damage as well?
That line should read:

The problem is that they have defined bounty hunter by skills rather than by the job. A bounty hunter, should be a job. The player should then CHOSE the skills with which to finish that job.
Can you imagine if someone started to manufacture handguns IRL which could only be used by Bounty Hunters? Does this even make sense? Does it start to make sense?
No of course not. Swordsman is a skill, not a job. A bounty hunter is a profession, and not a set of skills.
Yet the devs insist that the one are the same (which isn't true).
It's not just about creating elite melee professions. It's about the whole setup. Carbineers and Pistoleers get screwed too. There is no such thing as a Carbineer profession. The idea is nonsense. You can't go out and market yourself as a Carbineer........... It's not a profession.
Pikeman is NOT a profession either. Neither is 2 handed Swordsman. These aren't professions, yet we are lumped in with them. Smuggling is a profession, but what does it have to do with pistols or with "slicing?" It makes ZERO sense and it ruins the game for those who wanted to use certain weapons. We end up careerless because career people must use certain weapons. It's a dumb system.
I can totally understand, by the way, that certain professions do need certain skills.
To be a doctor, for example, you have to know medicine and science. To be a soldier, you have to know tactics. To be a bounty hunter, you have to know how to track someone down. These things I agree upon. But beyond that I strongly disagree.
Once you pick soldier, or smuggler, or bounty hunter, or doctor, then you should be allowed to pick from a WIDE variety of weapons and skills which would be useful to the profession. You shouldn't be required to fill up 16 little skill boxes and then declare yourself to be a master. That's just nonsense.
Also, I'm not sure exactly what this has to do with anything?

By the way, if you only want to use certain weapons then you only need to go to novice in almost any combat profession and you'll have them.
Have you actually played the game or do you just post on the forums?

I hate to say it, but the game is how it is. It's not going to change.
Then not many people are going to continue their subscriptions. Mediocre content, a pathetic targeting system, pvp that makes no sense, character professions which aren't professions, etc...... I realize some of you will take whatever is provided, but most people realize that other games will be on the market shortly.
