Thread: confused about our role please help

ok

swordsman melee defense

rifleman ranged defense

sooo riflemen out damage us and draw the aggro and we get stuck chasing the rifleman runnning from the aggro. taunts don't work melee defense useless for use rifleman ranged defense useless to them i'm not sure how the whole group combat thing works anymore can someone tell me ?

there is this thing called hate. the more hate one person gets, then they get the agro. hate is built up by high damage and healing. my sugguestion for melee, as it works for me, is you attack first, use armor break then power hit and area taunt and you will have the agro.

Sounds to me like the people you are grouping with don't know what they are doing. This game is now just like any other MMO, where the nukers gotta watch their damage or they're going to get pounded. That rifleman is an idiot for pulling agro off you to start with, then running around like mad. He needs to learn his role in a group, and it's not to go nuts with sniper shot.


Swordsman are tanks, though I use the term losely as far as a swordsman is concerned. TKM are better tanks, but that's the way it's supposed to be. As a swordsman, your job in tanking is this, in order from start to finish in a fight...



  1. Taunt the mob

  2. Armor Break the mob

  3. KD the mob (if you have the ability)

  4. Hit the mob with Critical HIt

  5. Taunt the mob

  6. Commence dealing as much damage as possible

  7. Taunt when the mob looks about to bolt for anybody else

If you have TKM it makes it easier, as I still believe that the TK "Taunt Bonus" ability also influences area taunt (but I could be wrong, haven't done any hard testing). And if you have the points and really really wanna tank, then I strongly recommend taking Combat Medic 4000. This will give you Advanced Bacta Spray, an area effect heal that will heal everyone around. Bacta Spray is currently the best taunt in the game.


Be warned that taking CM as a melee is a serious SP drain, as it requires xxx4 from Marksman. Doc heals also help with agro management and take less SP for a melee profession, but nothing can currently beat Bacta Spray in the taunt factor.

What? I didn't know SWG had a "I win" button. Are you serious, I've never seen a Jedi do that much damage.


What creature can be damaged at 2500+??? My 1150 max. damage hammer can dish that out (with armor break on)...to a womp rat...on good days.

And that's why I pointed out in my response to the OP that the riflemen that go nuts on damage need to learn their roles. Anymore if I run into those people I let them get incapped as often as they like since that appears to be what they want. They need to learn that they aren't there to do as much damage as possible in as little time as possible. Agro management goes both ways. It's not just the tanks job, it's everyone's job.


Taunts do work, just not as well as they should considering the stupid amounts of damage that some professoins can put out, let alone the taunt factor of heals, especially Bacta Spray.

Taunt does need a lot of work currently, it has since CU Beta The thing I dislike about it the most at the moment is the total lack of any visual representation of it - apart from knowing you've clicked on the button/hit the right key, you don't have any kind of notice that you've taunted - no particle effect, which is bizzare in the sparkle-dominated world that SWG has become Not even a dull, boring old "You successfully taunt your target!" System message - Nada. The only way you know taunt has worked currently is when you start getting hit again, which is kinda daft if you ask me Just as an aside, Dominate Mind, or Force Taunt, seems to work quite well - My Jedi Knight can control Aggro quite well even in a group of Riflemen (and Medics ) - However, that brings me to my other issue with taunt currently - the cooldown is far too long to make it a viable way to save people getting killed, even if the hate system was better. /sigh I should really post this in the Current CU Issues thread.. But it's late here.

they dont... ive been one. maybe sniper shot and crit shot but thats it. i can do 2100+ as a swordsman and 2500+ with crit hit and power hit.do that and a taunt and you will get agro. my taunts also work great as im tkm which give taunt bonus.

wow the highest damage i have done is 1600 and that is fully states kd creature.


With a max damage 1050 hammer.

try power hit and make sure the mob you are hitting is no resistant to your power hammer. Remember , your special do x -? damage. Oh, and do not use a hammer with too low bottem end stats. you may be getting the low end of the damage range also.
