Thread: New idea for combat professions: The weapon drawing animation!
Today when I was playing my swordsman/ranger and I unequiped my sword when I entered the cantina I had a great idea.
Why is it when we unequip a weapon it just disapears from our displayed character and becomes unhighlighted in our inventory? You see, I always unequip my weapon before entering a public place away from the wilderness I spend most of my time in. This signals others in the area I am non hostile and I am either there to do business or rest.
So why exactly does it disapear when we unequip it? My idea is to have a weapon drawing/holstering and/or sheathing animation. This could work for any combat class really. Lets say when I equip my curved 2 hander(which I am extremely proud of) a sheath automatically appears at my side and when I unequip it I sheath my weapon. And when I equip it I pull it out in a nice little slick animation.
This could work for any kind of weapon. It would involve you designating your primary weapon to appear on your person when it was unequiped. This could work for holstering pistols and strapping your rifle over shoulder. You could put your pike on your back or have a vibroaxe at your side.
It just struck my that it would be pretty cool if I was leaving the anchorhead tavern with a sheathed katana at my side and when I suddenly see some imp raiders I break out my blade and charge them.
This could also make for some interesting dueling situations, for example, two pistol users having a showdown and pulling the old high noon fast draw.
I just want to be able to sit down in the cantina with my katana at my side so everyone who sees me knows what I do without even seeing my profession under my name
So does anyone agree that this would be a cool idea that the devs should seriously consider?

that is indeed cool
might be a problem for hybrid though.. for example, i'm a rifleman/swordsman/CH...
does that mean i have a sheathed sword, a rifle strapped to my back, and seven pokeballs attached to my belt?
what about when i switch? do i need to sheath my katana first, then reach back and get the rifle..
or when the enemy close in.. do i need to strap the rifle first... and then reach for the sheathed katana? =)
lastly, wheni switch to katana (and the sheath) does the rifle disappear?... and when i switch weapon from rifle to katana, does it come sheathed or unsheathed? ah ha ha ha ha ha
but it would indeed be cool...
another thing to consider: this means SOE has to pay the live model to do the sheathing movement etc, the animator to animate the thing, the modeler to create sheathe/etc... program it all in, and fix the bug.. and fix the bug.. and fix the bug (repeat 15 times more)
think they're gonna do it?... why of course, lets be positive =)
....asking/trying won't harm anyone...eventhough i also believe that the amount of programing/developing would be enormous...
hmmm...would be nice to carry my cleaver on my back and then to pull it out above my head/shoulders....
This has so much potential. Only instead of unequiping it and your character holstering or sheath it, it should work like mood commands. So your weapon is always equiped, but you can type /sheath to sheath your weapon, and /draw to pull it out. When battle starts your character automatically draws, but it can be used socially, for instance if your weapon is sheathed you appear more at ease, whereas if it is drawn you may be saying en gaurd to someone.
Another idea, you should be able to specify how you want it sheathed, on your back, at your side, etc. Rifles and pistols would work the same way, riflemen could put theyre rifle in theyre gunmans duster, pistoleers could put there pistols in theyre boots, the potential is unlimited!
I hope they take care of some other issues first, but once they do i'll keep my fingers crossed for them to implement this.
Well in regards to hybrids I was thinking that you could probably have as many holstered/sheathed weapons displayed on your person up to a reasonable limit. For example, could have a rifle over your back and a pistol at your side. What would determine what weapons in your inventory that are displayed would simply involve you designating exactly what you would want on your character.
So suppose you had a sword in your inventory, the steps would go
1. You designate the sword, the sword appears sheathed at either side of you or on your back sheathed depending on your preference.
2. So this means your sword is equiped, if you wish to take it out of the sheath simply type /draw and when you are done type /sheath
I think it would be ok to have aboout 3 weapons designated buy only one drawn at a time. You could have 3 slots. The right leg, the left leg, and the back slot. Each with a different animation obviously. So you could type /draw leftleg or /draw back etc.
So how does that sound?
