You could lower melee defense on a mob, but i think it would be a bigger hastle than convinience personally.

not really. One of the lower level traps makes targets more vulnerable to melee attacks and can be applied multiple times. But I dont think this stacks and I dont know what sort of vulnerabilites it gives. The Bone Spur trap will apply a stun and do mind damage which could be useful, and adhesive mesh traps are good for slowing creatures down if you are kiting (not common for swordsman).
Most scout traps except for adhesive mesh and glow wire rarely work on high level MOBs, and when I say high level I mean like huurtons and up. Therefore anything you would use traps on wouldnt pose too much risk to a swordsman, even unbuffed. IMO it is not a worthwhile augmentation to swordsmen, there are much better places to spend your skill points. There is a real art to trapping though IMO. In that unbuffed, with an arsenalof traps, you can solo some pretty cool stuff. I used to solo grauls unbuffed with my BH just throwing adhesive mesh and hitting it with the LLC. Adhesive mesh can also save a group member who is trying to get away from a creature.
You should probably check out the scout forums for more info on traps. And if you like trapping, I always did, then use it, it is a neat and effective tool in the game. Plus with the new scout droids you can load it with traps and it will launch them for you, so if you arent using a droid for anything else, that little bit of help cant hurt.

As a Ranger/Swordsman/medic I say hell yes there are useful ones. Sharp bone spurs blind a target so they hit less. Noisemakers stun so they attack less often(it seems that's how that one works at least). GLow wire traps make a target vulnerable to melee and ranged attacks and are more likely to take effect than the trap that just lowers melee defense. Using these traps wisely can help a lot for some of the tougher fights. Just keep an eye on your action bar. If you've thrown 2 of the same trap and neither takes effect, don't use those traps on that creature. I also use traps to try to draw a creature away from a group. I believe max trapping range is 50M.
