Is this profession worth investing time in? I mean does it get any better at the advanced levels?

I just learned novice swordsman last night and was wondering if I should unlearn everything and should just be a marksman.

Boy, talk about a subjective question...

It all depends on what you want to do; what you enjoy. When I bought the game, I did so with the goal of eventually playing a Jedi - point blank, nothing else. To me, the two-handed swordsman is the closest we get to that without actually being a Jedi, so for me, this is it. Ain't nothin' else gonna cut it (no pun intended).

However, that being said, I'll point out a few things. Having been a number of different professions, this is what I've seen:

For making money, either weaponsmith, armorsmith, or just mining (Installations 3 in the architect profession) will take care of you. With the new experimentation "fix," doing just installations 3 might not be quite so profitable, but I haven't seen that be an issue yet.

For PvP, bounty hunter and creature handler seem to be the most powerful (I wouldn't know first hand because I haven't played either and don't do a lot of PvP, but that seems to be the consensus on the boards). Melee characters, in general, seem to suck at PvP, because people can and do run away - while they're running (and shooting), you're bleeding and stopping.

Among the melee characters, TKAis supposed to be the toughest. If you just want to be the "ultimate melee" tough guy, this might be it. Of course, I'm 3 and 2 in duels with TKAs, and all I have is a measly sword, so who knows? I DO know that I'm planning to get TKA as a secondary class in addition to swordsman, but whether I go master TKA in addition to master sword, or just partial, is still undecided.

If you do go swordsman, get the best **edit** sword you can possibly get. Just like anything else in SWG, the equipment makes the fighter.

That's really a question only you are going to be able to answer.

I enjoy swords, as do some of the people that post here. I have no glaring problems in pve or pvp, I can hold my own just fine.

Others don't. Which is strange, because if I didn't enjoy being a swordsman I'd drop it in a heartbeat and pick up something else. Why play a game if you're not having fun?

The end answer to your question though is something only you will be able to answer, and you might not be able to come to that answer until you have mastered swordsmanship to get a true feel of the class.

The easy things to consider that might help with the decision: Do you like being the one hit? Do you like the cat and mouse chase and capture (if pvp)? As a melee you will be able to take more damage and deal more damage than any other class, the condition being having to get in range. This might not be the thing for you, as I feel it's not the thing for a some people that post here, yet they keep trying anyway.

Well my Wookiee brother take this with a grain of salt as I am considered to be one of the negative ones around here. If your big thing is pvp, then do not do master swordsman. The ones here claiming to be just fine in pvp have said things that to me just dont wash. However, there is a critical factor that I perhaps I have overlooked. They are a different species than us Wookiees. I have a MK3 that is 30% resists across the board. Im a master doc that can buff every stat but mind by 2000-2500. Some say I have no tactics. The facts are Wookiees have no armor. This clobbers us even with the expensive shield. We get extra stats but damage is done on a percenatage method. We cannot take the damage especially to the mind.

Now, if you are going to PVE exclusively then you will have fun and be fine....

Hey, fellow furballs... You know, I had to laugh when I heard this. Being somewhat impatient and unwilling to invest the time required to upgrade my defensive equipment, I actually took two whole months off to purchase another account and grind a master weaponsmith just so I could make my own swords. Nice swords, too.

HOWEVER... I've been using a BROKEN (yes, broken - condition 0/1000) MK1 for the last two months, and haven't put any thought into getting a new shield. 1.5% resists across the board, ha ha...

Sheesh! Maybe might be a good idea if I actually bought a new shield generator, huh?

thnx for the info.

I'm been a brawler pretty much for all my wookie life. Always had to deal with the simple fact that all a person had to do was run away from me when I'm doing PVP. Sigh...that's why I wanted to know if this profession was worth it. Seems like it is.
