Hey everyong.

Anyone know exactly what toughness is suppose to do? I've been having a harder time in combat, trying to figure out what in faction haviing toughness of 30 gets me. Was trying to figure out if it was broken, as it seems even with armor working dmg to me was higher.

Thanks for any input on this

Melee toughness reduces melee damage 1% for every 1 point of toughness. It's a shame it doesn't work on ranged attacks though.

Melee Defense is how often you get hit with melee weapons.

Ranged Defense is how often you get hit with ranged weapons.

I believe it's also a 1% per 1 point base but that is modified by defensive bonuses you might have (due to running or tumbling) and attack bonuses the enemy has (accuracy bonuses, kneel/prone, etc).

Regardless the higher the defense the harder you are to hit, which really is the best form of defense.

I'm pretty sure melee defense mod is not 1% for every +1, since the melee defense from other melee profs stack, it'd be ridiculous to imagine that with 80 or so melee defense I'd only be hit 20% of the time.

Again, Daniel, that is base resist.

You have accuracy mods on your weapons given range, plus what your skills provide (consider the110 accuracy we get in our master sword plus the 8 base sword accuracy mod at all ranges).

So no 75 melee defense does not mean you will be missed 3 out of 4 times unless you're fighting someone with no skills in whatever weapon they're using.

Ok Shimond lets look at the numbers here between a swordsman and a ranged class...since we're most concerned about us vrs ranged class.

Swordsman has 60 ranged defense
Marksman has 60 ranged accuracy

What does this mean assuming no other modifiers? Does this mean a 50/50 chance to hit? since all is even and nobody has the advantage?.

I assume that the Markman ranged accuray scales down a lot as the distance gets further and if they are moving ect...but how much I wonder is the accuracy adjustment from point blank to 15m, to 30m, 45m..ect.

It seems like it would work by calculating all the modifiers for both the shooter and the person getting shot and come up with either a positive, negative or 0 % chance to hit. Of course it seems like you could never have a 0 % chance to hit.

If the scale down in accuracy for the Shooter between say point blank and 30m is quite a bit then getting that extra 10 ranged defense will make a big difference. If its not a lot then there might not be much of a difference between say 40 ranged def and 60 ranged def

It relates to what skills you pick for your character ..since if it makes a big difference you might want to get ranged def modifies from other classes.

I seem to recall someone on here saying they knew someone with a 65 or so ranged def and they were extreemly difficult to hit in PVP.

Yea that was me actually.

Vymordryss, my guild sharpshooter, has a ranged defense of 74 and I've seen her take on up to 7 people shooting at her simultaneously and they could not kill her before they were killed (I think that particular engagement was 7 vs 4 or something).

So ranged defense definately works. She's also hard as hell to hit in melee, though I'm not sure what her melee score is.

I highly recommend taking up skills to get these modifications if possible as not being hit takes precedence over armor absorb and special resists in terms of overall defense.

Also my thoughts on how exactly the defense scores is mostly hearsay and theory. I am no developer so I don't have hard numbers or facts. But none of us playing do. I just know what I've seen and what seems to make sense.

Toughness isn't a 1-1 ratio. My TKA has a toughness of 57 and he only takes 30% of the damage dealt to him. When I was pikeman I had toughness of 30 I think and I was getting hit for something like 50%.

One day I will do the proper tests to figure out the formula behind melee and missile defense. I do know that TKA vs pikeman, the TKA will never miss and the pikeman will only miss occasionally. Now that skill enhancers are in the game I can do much more extensive and accurate testing which I am happy of.

Shi,

It's 75 RD, 73 base MD (Modified to 81 or so with SEAs).

From my experiance Ranged Defnese pays off.

Melee defense though effective does not seem to be as helpful as ranged defense.

That may be due to the fact that typically when in melee, your always in ideal range, where as ranged has a large spread.

I did some tests with the Cats SL, Yumeki useing Ralley.

I was auto attacking her SL in Melee. It missed me about 20% of the time.

With Ralley it missed me about 55% of the time.

So it would seem my MD is on some teeter point of effectivness.

In short, defenses are definatly worth it. The hugely powerful offesnive classes like commando's, CM's, BH's have nearly no defneses period. So you melee's should be useing that to your advantage.

toughness works on the weapon you hold too.

Toughness only works on the type of weapon you have equipped.

Two Hand Toughness only works with two hand weapons in hand.

Unarmed Toughness only works barehead or with a vibroknuckle.

And the very highest toughness available through skills is 57 or so unarmed with master Brawler and master Teras Kasi.
