Welcome to The Heron Order !
The Calling
Down through the ages, no matter how evolved our technology has become, we still hold one ancient artifact of war to be the symbol of strength and honor, valor and victory: The Sword. A mark of achievement, rank, skill, loyalty, fellowship, and many other signs of service, the sword, in its many incarnations, is also a formidable weapon. Our greatest fantasies of adventure and mortal combat never omit the sword, for it is a star in the heavens of high fantasy. In Star Wars Galaxies the pinnacle of training and knighthood is marked by the Light Sabre. Those of us who long for the day we might advance to the point of being able to wield our own have undertaken to study and learn the art and craft of its Hephaestian forefathers. If you share a similar love of the blade, you have come to the right place.
The Trials
We are a guild of swordsmen, fencers, and polearmsmen. We seek members of like kind. We are honest creatures, and true, so we have no shame in admitting that we seek the finest metal in our weapons, and the finest mettle in our companions. To this end we have a series of trials that must be overcome in order to become a member of the Heron Order. The Heron Order is not a guild for people who seek power, strength, and money above all else. Impatience to advance and boastfulness are not qualities we desire among our ranks. That is why we have the trials.
The trials are not based on ones skill with the blade, and they are easily completed by the companions we seek, for it is in their nature to react in these ways. However, they are difficult for those who do not share or practice the principles we hold dear. The precise nature of the trials cannot be revealed to those not sworn to the Heron Order. This secrecy is necessary to insure an honest test of the candidate's character. Foreknowledge of the trials would render them useless, and would fail to reveal the predispositions of our candidates. Some guilds have a policy of aggressively recruiting anyone they can, perhaps in in an attempt to become the largest guild in the galaxy. That is not the way of the Heron Order. While there is safety in numbers, there is not always comfort and true camaraderie. The Heron Order would much rather be a tightly knit guild of people who can trust each other - each knowing that the other has passed these trials and has shown the same metal in their soul and their blade as your own. We want a guild of people who are passionate about putting the welfare of The Heron Order and their brothers ahead of themselves, who will look upon them as a family. The Order will always strive to never request anything of its members; rather we prefer members to simply volunteer what they feel they would like to the guild and guild members when they are in need, knowing that others will do likewise.
The Soul of a Heron
The principles the Heron Order holds closest to its bladed heart, and for which each candidate is tested are: Patience, Dedication, Perseverance, Compassion, and Selflessness. The trials are extremely effective in testing for these. Candidates having adequate capacity in these virtues complete the trials very easily. Those with diminished capacity in these virtues often get frustrated or angry and fail to respond in a positive way to the trials, hence failing.
