I was thinking of going with this template
MRifle/MSwords/Novice BH
However, I've heard that mixing melee and ranged it stupid, and I do not know what to do now.
I've also considered (melee)
MSwords/TKM/MFencer
Or perhaps (ranged)
MRifles/MMarksman/MCommando
Please help me out here...is mixing ranged and melee profession a bad idea?

Not nessicarily bad...but mixing a melee and ranged profession really takes away from other benefits you could have. You no longer need both professions to get the damage mitigation skills. Therefor, by concentrating on either ranged or melee templates, you can stack more skills and abilities. Generally a completely melee char, or a completely ranged char will be 'better' in the skills and abilities....but ultimately it is up to you...hope this helped, i know i wasnt as clear as i wanted to be.

It's a thorny one at the moment - It Should be clear cut - a person who can use a gun AND a sword should be more useful all-round than a guy who can JUST use a Sword or JUST use a Gun.. But sadly, that seems not to be the case at the moment. Personally, I'd say having the ability to damage from range with the option of switching to a better defended/more accurate/equally damaging melee profession if your preygets too close would be ideal, which is why my "normal" toon is labelled as Rifles/Swords at the moment - That's what I intend for her still, I'm trying Rifles/Commando at the moment (Mainly just because I love the Assault Armour
) But I'm the kind of person to stick with something I want even if it makes my life difficult

Actually no they shouldn't be more useful even IRL - because if you are trained in gun skills and trained in knife/sword skills because you would never be ableto focus on getting extremely proficient in one or the other therefore making you average in both unless you specialized in one and just learned basic use with the other - and to answer the original posters question

Fair comment that it would be difficult to focus on becoming extremely proficient in either, but the Samurai were able to train in Swordsmanship and extremely accurate use of a Bow, so to say you'd "never" be able to learn how to use both to an expert level is untrue

that sounds like a good idea to me.
pre-cu, i was a carbineer-swordsman, trying to stack the counter attack, but that didn't work out too welll for me. post cu, i have no clue, but i was considering testing out a ranged/melee build..
maybe try it out with a free re-spec, and get back to us and let us know how it worked?

I haven't actually tested this, but a ranged/melee template involving smuggler (or commando, but I recommend smuggler for the specials) might work pretty well. I say this because Smuggler has some pretty decent unarmed fighting bonuses.
Take a look at this build at http://home-tdknet.dyndns.org/swg/cb/
Master TKA
Master Pistoleer
Smuggler 0044 (or any two branches that includes xx4x for the Unarmed mods)
You'll really have to work it during duels and fight smart, but I think it could definately work. The reason I went with master pistoleer instead of master smuggler, is that the Master Smuggler box doesn't have any unarmed fighting mods, so I thought the points were better spent in pistoleer.
Out of curiousity, has anyone tried this?
