Thread: Counterattack -- How does it work?

Sorry for the newbi/lowbie question here, but I can't find the answer to this one.

How does counterattack actually work? It seems there are two options:

1. It works like dodge or block -- basically it simply makes the opponent miss.

2. It works like a parry-riposte. It deflects the attack, and then you hit them back (a free attack) for normal damage.

Does anyone know? I've asked around quite a bit, and most swordsman don't know the answer to this one.

Thanks,

Pig

I just reread my post. Let me clarify my question.

It is possible that there are *three* ways that CA works.

1. It simplydefends against anincoming attack. (The skill description would seem to indicate otherwise, but who knows).

2. It defends against an attack, and immediately lands a normal-power attack against the attacker. (The skill description might support this interpretation). Kind of like a parry-riposte.

3. It offers no defence against an incoming attack, but immediately lands a normal-power attack against the attacker (again, the skill description might also support this interpretation).

The overall reason that I'm asking is that I've yet to meet a swordsman who actually *knows.* Most have never given it a thought. The rest are equally split between possiblity two and three.

As an up-and-coming swordsman, this is a subject of much curiousity to me, and I'd appreciate anyone who has any input.

It is nothing more than a dodge or block even though the description says otherwise.

I've seen myself counter attack, it is a pretty rare occasion, and you do attack after you avoid the attack. But I think you have to have your 2 handed weapon out, and you have to be in range. I've counterattacked while I had my rifle equiped, and I think I just avoided the attack. It is hard to tell because you hardly ever do it, but it isn't as rare as it seems, just look at your combat logs after you fight something.

One time when I counterattacked I noticed I still got the armor absorb message below the counterattack line. So, that would seem to imply it does to damage. Unfortunately, it doesn't say how much. Also, it doesn't say how much damage the counter attack does.

The thing is, we swing so fast that it's hard to see if we put an extra swing in there or not. I honestly don't have a clue what this move does. I don't know if we take damage. I don't know if the mob takes damage. It's just impossible to tell. They need to give us more information in the text box about it.

I believe I read somewhere that counterattack makes it impossible for your opponent to block/dodge the nextattack you make.

I have seen myself counterattack (in the combat logs). Since I don't regularly scan combat log spam, it is hard to tell how often it happens. In the one case where I saw it happen, it was a creature hitting me for normal damage, and subsequently I counter attacked it and hit it for normal damage. It looked something like:

A giant worrt hits you for 53 damage.

You counterattack a giant worrt!

You hit a giant worrt for 300 damage.

(mind you this is not verbatim)

I am still uncertain whether the attack that came after the "You counterattack.." message was a normal hit that I would have done anyway, or it was the counter attack hit. It's impossible to tell. The one thing I can tell is that counterattacks DO NOT block or dodge or anything else. They simply give us one more normal attack when they happen. I might be wrong, but the combat log leads me to believe that this is the case.

Can you really dodge or block with a 2-handed sword equipped?

I spend a fair amount of time scanning combat spam (I've got lots of spare time running back from 2km destroy missions outside Keren :smileytongue and it seems like counterattack, at least when performed by mobs, does not grant the counterattack-er a freehit or anything of the sort.

I have no idea if the counterattack swordsmen get is different, as I'm a pikeman. I'd imagine they'd be the same, but you never know.
