First of all, no I'm not asking about caps. I'm telling about them.
I've seen lots of posts that say tapes and BE clothing bring you above the 125 cap on Melee/Ranged defense. Others say they don't. Being unable to find a difinitive word either way, I tested it. It's not a particularly thorough test, and there are several ways it could be made more robust, but it's good enough for me. Hopefully, this'll help other new defense stackers plan their characters.
BE does not take you above 125 Melee Defense. I do not own any tapes, so I can't comment on them. And I didn't test Ranged Defense. However, I'll bet all three answers are the same.
Here's my proof:
No BE clothing
Trial 1: 34.219% (1)
Trial 2: 35.333% (2)
Trial 3: 34.396% (15)
One piece of BE clothing (+4 Melee)
Trial 1: 34.114% (3)
Trial 2: 35.738% (4)
Trial 3: 41.000% (14)
Two pieces of BE clothing (+8 Melee)
Trial 1: 32.215% (5)
Trial 2: 33.110% (6)
Trial 3: 32.667% (13)
Three pieces of BE clothing (+12 Melee)
Trial 1: 31.115% (7)
Trial 2: 33.779% (8)
Trial 3: 33.946% (12)
Four pieces of BE clothing (+16 Melee)
Trial 1: 34.448% (9)
Trial 2: 36.728% (10)
Trial 3: 32.500% (11)
A couple notes. First, the numbers indicate the order I performed the tests, because I wasn't healing or anything in between tests. So if Battle fatigue plays a roll in these figures, you can guess as to how. I'm guessing not, judging from the base test, where my BF rose by over 600 but the miss percentage hardly changed.
Also, my testing procedure. I'm a master fencer/swordsman, and I had my vibroblade out. These numbers are straight misses. As I understand it, dodges are calculated as hits, so I left those figures out for simplicity's sake. I can get them back if need be. In all cases, I was peaced and prone and against four Kreetles. I would go prone, then execute the following macro:
/tell leeso ***begin***
/log
/pause 600
/log
/tell leeso ***end***
I then renamed the resulting log file, made any changes neccessary to prepare for the next test, and then ran the macro again. I wrote a simple Bash script that calculated the various percentages. If desired, I'll provide the script. It's not too good, but if anybody else wants to perform a similar test, it is probably not too hard to modify for calculating other data. Perhaps counterattack percentages or something. Whatever.
Anyhow, I ended up with a file with percentages in it, which I took apart and pasted here.
So there you have it. If there was any doubt before, I hope there isn't now.
