Thread: Melee/Range Defense vs Toughness

As of the patch on TC both TKAs and fencers get high amounts of melee/ranged defense mods. This is appropriate as the more melee/ranged defense you have the easier it is to dodge attacks (melee/ranged defense only helps dodge attacks, not take less damage from them), and TKAs and fencers are professions that are supposed to dodge a lot, hit fast and often, while not being able to take damage or dish out big damage.

Swordsmen and Pikemenshould bethe opposite of TKA and Fencer, hitting much harder but not as often, and being able to take damage much better. Since TKA/fencer get mods ot help them avoid damage, Pikeman/Swordsmen should have mods to help lessen damage taken so they can fulfill the role of "tank". Weapon toughness would fill this role nicely, but neither swordsman nor pikeman gets enough to make a big enough difference. Pikeman and Swordsmen should get weapon toughness at least comparable to, if not greater than, the melee/ranged defense that the TKA/fencer professions get. Having a lot of weapon toughness would allow both pikeman and swordsman to tank, while only allowing the defensive mods to be effective while wielding a polearm/2-handed weapon.

Not only would making swordsmen and pikemen into "tanks" help these two professions by increasing their effectiveness, but it would also lower people's reliance on creatures as the only viable tanks in the game.

I agree. We should get more melee toughness. This is how I envisioned the 2H swordsman.

Nice post!

Maybe they could add a toughness modifier to the 3rd tier of the finesse line, since that seems to be an open area.

Which of the mods qualify you for being a tank? Since I am still on novice, I get incapped on a regular base and getting a sturdy defense is my highest priority.

Each branch of the brawler tree has a specific melee toughness that activates while you are wielding a weapon of that type (no weapon or vibroknuchler for unarmed). The different types are unarmed toughness, one-handed melee toughness, two-handed melee toughness, and polearm toughness.

For a swordsman, the more two-handed melee toughness you have, the less damage you take when you get hit. The problem is that we cannot get more than 38 two-handed melee toughness at Master Swordsman, 20 of which comes from brawler.

Since swordsmen and pikemen have neither high melee/ranged defense mods nor high toughness mods that means that they cannot effectively dodge attacks or take less damage from the attacks.

Are you talking about the +5 melee/ranged defense that is on the TC right now or something else?

I made a mistake on the last post. Swordsman got an increase of 5 two-handed melee toughness, not melee or ranged defense.

i think that sword and pike SHOULD get more toughness than fencer and TK than what they are currently getting. TK get +57, pike and sword should get at least 60 -65 toughness being as TK and fencer are more of the offensive type and pike and sword the other.

this coming from a TKM too

TKA/Fencers higher melee/ranged defense and swordsman/pikeman higher toughness. Sounds reasonable, but on TC right now TKAs get higher toughness, higher melee/ranged defense and higher defense acuity than swordsmen/pikemen counterattack/block. It's messed up. There is no reason why TKA should be higher in all 3 categories.
