Thread: Are Swordsman underpowered?

Hey all,

I've been working on my swordsman for awhile now (2/2/3/2) and I am seeing more and more just how our class is underpowered. I have attempted to dual every other (combat) class I find and all though I have managed to win a few duels, I lose about 70-75% of the time.I love the class, but since it's starting to become unfun, I am thinking of dropping it for Bounty Hunter ormaybe even (cringe)Commando. I was hoping for a little input from the rest of you regarding Swordsman and our overall effectiveness before Istart typing yes after hitting surrender skill. Does anyone else feel like we aren't up to speed with everyone else(Save for Pikeman..those poor guys/girls)? TKA is the most brutal melee in the game which ispretty **edit**ty since they get so much more for the same amount of skill point/xp cost we have to spend. Does SOE confirm our gimped status? Am I just being too picky? BTW this is a bit off the topic, but I study swordsmanship and empty hand arts in rl (Been studying for well over 15 years now) and from my studies, Two-Handed Swordsman mainly attacked the Body (Torso, Arms, Legs, Wrists) and the throat. The head is never a primary target since it's much harder to hit and is made ofsolid BONE.There are many techniques used to knock anopponent over with a twohanded sword (Thus we SHOULD get a KD), cause gapping wounds in vital areas (Health and Actionbleed attacks), as well astechniques that are meant to subdue the opponent (Dizzy? Stun?). The swordsmanclass get's almost none of these. Keep in mind that this is all weighed against other melee type fighters. I would never expect to run against a gunman and live. THanks for your help everyone.

shhh.. The fact that we can hit the only unhealable pool in the game is just about the only thing we have going for us atm

We might be lacking in defences and other skill mods overall, but definately not underpowered. Would you call 23k in one hit underpowered?

Lol, no. 23k in One swing is not underpowered, but playing a "Swordsman" in SWG contradicts a lot of what I learned as a student of "real life" swordsmanship. I think what the devs have gone and done is create a class they called "Swordsman" with only game balance and cool factor in mind and didn't give a thought to trying to recreate a "Real-Life" style of swordsmanship. Almost all of the Swordsman Special Animatios would get you KILLED In real life. Area Attack 1 Anybody? Like I said before. I LOVE THIS CLASS! I just wish we were up to snuff with everyone else...actually.. I wish we and Pikemen were up to snuff with everyone else.

Hi,

Next time try using bullets.. er spaces between your topics. It's much easier to read and adress the topics while repying. - thanks

We've had a lot of RL sword people and martial arts experts explain how the class isn't realistic and your inputs are valuable. THe 2H profession doesn't seem to be designed by one of these. As some one once joked they "gave it to a guy in the office from vermont who spilts wood"

Anyway.. we do have a great correspondent in Gorecki who is working with the designer for Heavy Swordsman. Not sure what the progress is. there is a thread on this page that talks about some of the things that are being proposed. You can read that.

I wouldn't count on them making any huge changes to the profession such as "not attacking heads". We wouldn't want that anyway since it whats make us sooo dangerous and unique.

One continuing gripe is about how we don't have a knockdown... and I can easily imaginethat if I were hit be a100 pound sword it would do more than make me kneel for a prayer for 3 seconds.

"I think what the devs have gone and done is create a class they called "Swordsman" with only game balance and cool factor in mind and didn't give a thought to trying to recreate a "Real-Life" style of swordsmanship."

Hit the nail on the head.

Video Games in general, and the whole idea of StarWars infact, aren't really about "realism" (there are exceptions ofcourse.) Especially so with SWG because its an RPG. It's ALL about stats and balance. The stat-based nature of RPG's dosn't really leave room for realism.

If people want realistic swordsmanship, they should become a real life swordsman

Your head is made of solid bone? Wherever do you keep your brain?

Nevermind.

Heh, I don't think I came across as I intended (and no, my head is not SOLID bone.) I think the fact that swordsman is intended to target a HAM bar that cannot be healed easily is awesome. I'll stick with the class since it is a lot of fun to play in PvE. I'll mull aroun some ideas to throw at Goreki and rest of you. Thanks for your input.

When compared with ranged profs, all melee profs will be underpowered. But when you compare our class with other melee profs, we are far from underpowered. We are like the second best melee prof right now, just below TKAs. After the TC patch goes Live though, I think we would be dropped down to 3rd place. Pikemen are wayyyyyy more underpowered than we are, so I wouldn't worried about it. As for fun factor, I think our class is really fun, just my opinion though. Our PvP side will never be as good as, say, a Pistoleer or BH, and our PvE side will never be as effective as Commandos or.. well Pistoleers... but we are far from not fun. I play Swordsman because I love the cool looking specials, and I enjoy the up-in-your-face style of play. I hope you find some fun in our class, if not, just drop it and go Commando.

Tkas are quite a bit better than us now and after the patch they will be even farther ahead of us.

We can still have fun though. My character does pretty well. Of course most of my power seems to come from the fact i am a master doctor also. Without buffs i can't kill the big creatures and my ham runs out fast from specials, but with buffs i can solo an ancient bull rancor... if i run once to heal my mind (stupid mind bleeds! :mad I am only 0/3/1/2 swordsman too, but i am working on it heh.

Just as a little side-note Pistoleers have beaten with the nerf stick until their face hurts and commando with a flamer tends to miss about 4 times out of 5 I don't know enough about them to comment but I do know that there is an "impression" that most people have about these classes that doesn't always hold up in the light.

not really. i think we need more deefense, lower hams, and the general melee problems of not being able to hit while running fixed.

thats really all i can think of, but it compliments my new template perfectly, and i friggin love it.

I think i have really only found 2 things I hate as a swordsman...

1) battle on hills....I HATE HILLS!!!

2) range limits: hey, I own 10 swords of various types, so I know about the range thing, but that doesnt mean I like it

Besides that, I love the 2H sword. Since day one, I havent wanted to be anything else. I have created alts on other servers to test other classes, but unless my holocron makes me a tailor or dancer or whatever, I will not give up my clever. Plus, I absolutely love to run out to Mos Taike and rally a group of banthas and tuskans and mindbleed them all just before I die, then run back to sit atop a hill and watch them all fall like dominoes...one by one. That has got to be one of my most fun activities.

Zakkeh, it's not an impression, it's personal experience. I used to hunt with a Commando who's also a 3/2/0/0 CH, and let me tell ya, it's not pretty. I almost always get the least amount of exp, since he can area flame 3-4 defilers at once and kill them all before I even kill ONE defiler. I will saythat Commandos tend to miss a lot outside of 20ms, but within 16, I've yet to see them miss "4 of out 5 times".
