OK, this is my first attempt at a guide so please be gentle

Getting to Novice Swordsman

I’ve finally made it to Novice swordsman and I thought I’d share with you what I’ve learned. Please feel free to contribute in any way or criticize if I have made any blunders.

While your choice of race is largely personal choice there are a few things to note. The Rodian (Greedo from EP:IV) has a bonus to Two Handed . This is not that significant but it is a small edge. A wookee cannot wear any conventional armour and so this is something to carefully consider. I am a wookee character so it by no means impossible.

If you choose to go pure melee then migrating your stats for a higher Health/Action pool is a good idea since your special will cost a fair amount. Since I was going the path of medic I rounded out my Health/Action/Mind to be all 900 with Focus and Willpower higher. Since I could heal my action and Health with my medic skills I needed a high Mind regeneration rate. All in all it works out well. You may set your stats to whatever you prefer but the important things to note is that our specials (especially when you get to Swordsman itself) cost a lot of HAM to execute. I would not recommend setting yourself with a very low Mind stat as you will be very vulnerable to Rifleman/Tera Kasi/Swordsman since they all have attacks that specifically target the Mind.

I created my character as an Artisan so I could get the crafting tool and the survey tools at creation. I migrated my stats while in the tutorial so I would begin my career already fully migrated. One thing to note about starting profession is that (I believe) your profession will determine what min/max you can set for your stats. For example, if you actually start as a Brawler you will be able to migrate your Health stats higher than if you start as an Entertainer (say). I have not extensively tested this though so could someone please confirm this?

My first few hours were running short delivery missions so I could train up the novice skills. I ended up training all of the starter professions just for the hell of it. If you wanted to be conservative of professions then settling with Brawler, Scout, and Medic will serve you well.

Why Scout and Medic? These professions are very useful for any character. As a medic you will be able to heal yourself in battle as well as reducing your downtime. As a scout you will be able to rest faster by making camps, move faster by getting exploration and harvest any critters for resources. I’ll not go into the usefulness of these things here though. Do you really need these professions? Not really, although I found soloing a lot easier with them 

OK, so you are ready to fight. Good. The first thing you want to do is get yourself a weapon that will give you Two-Handed experience. As a novice this is the Heavy Axe. This is a great weapon and I used this all the way until I reached Two-Handed IV (Master Two-Handed Specialist?). The easiest way to find one of these is to check out the Bazaar. You can quite often find them there for fewer than 200 credits. These will generally be axes crafted by novice Artisans and will usually have a damage rating of up to 100 or so. This isn’t great but it’s a start. You can get much better from a master Artisan but this usually cost a fair bit. I started my two-handed career with a 150 damage, 5.2 second axe and was using this though out most of the two handed sword tree.

To start off, you can either just head on out into the wilderness and start chopping away or you can get destroy missions. Either way, you will want to be fighting creatures. I found fighting NPC’s to be very irritating since they would quite often change to ranged weapons and constantly run away from you. Most upsetting. The advantage of missions is that they will give you cash (NPC also drop cash). Why do I need cash? Well, to buy a better weapon of course!

Once you reach a new tier in your two-handed tree you will get a new weapon certifications. I did not get any new weapons until 2HD sword IV and so I cannot really add much here. All I can suggest is to make friends with a Weaponsmith/Smuggler. The certifications you get do not match the same level of Artisan/Weaponsmithing which is somewhat confusing but with a little patience you should be able to get that killed cleaver/axe/sword. Smugglers can ‘slice’ your weapon increasing either damage or attack speed. As a swordsman, your idea is to do huge amounts of damage so you’ll want the best weapon you can afford. I think it is well worth just doing delivery missions (and you can get OK mission between Kaadara and Moenia on Naboo) to get enough money to buy one.

Getting up to Expert Two-handed Sword is relatively painless. Simply doing destroy missions is enough. Once you reach here though the 70000 experience requirement for Master Two-Handed Sword is quite a hurdle. I tried hunting in a group on Endor but I found that the critters were so tough that I rarely hit, did only small damage that I only got small amounts of exp. I found that the best ‘chop for buck’ was Fawned Rawls and Hermit Spiders (on Naboo). There may be other places with other critters but as I was stationed on Naboo these are what I fought. These guys give around 300 exp and the spider lairs spawn a considerable amount of them so you can do pretty well exp wise. If you can find a group you may be able to tackle tougher prey. Strangely enough though I found I was getting better exp of these solo mobs than when I grouped. When I reached Master 2H sword I then attained the Curved Two Handed Sword certification. This is a Katana and does great damage and has great speed. Combined you can really start to deal out death. I managed to get a damage 47-195 with a sliced speed of 2.5. While not especially great it was good enough for me.

The 125000 exp needed for Novice Swordsman may seem daunting but if you are prepared to group then there is vast amounts of exp to be made. I managed to find a group with just three players. Two of these players were Creature Handlers. This was an exp bonanza for me. The pets they used do only fairly small damage but had huge HAM. This meant that while they were soaking up the damage from the mobs I was happily slashing away with my Katana. Along with my Master Medic skills it was not long before I reached Novice Swordsman (I actually made it within one play session). Where did we hunt? Dathomire mostly. It was quite dangerous (especially since most mobs there are now aggressive) but still doable.

Well, now that you have acquired enough experience we need to train Novice Swordsman. I went to the trainer in Theed. I found out the location by going to SWG Stratics.

Congratulations! You can now proudly wear you new title of Novice Heavy Swordsman.

I hope this helps.

Thanks guys for reading through it all!

Naboo is a great starting planet. I spent most of my time skirting between Kaadar and Moenia.

Thanks DTox for the info on the weapons. I never tried the 2H Cleaver or the Vibro Axe so the info's appreciated. I'm just trying to get my hands on a Power Hammer but I'm not sure if some of the resources required are here on the Valcyn server ...

There are a few choices for the Two Handed Swordsmen as they make their way up to Novice Swordsman.

Novice Brawler - Heavy Axe

Int. Brawler - Two Handed Axe - Lower HAM costs than a Heavy Axe, similar damage.

Adv. Brawler - Two Handed Cleaver - Armor Piercing 1, higher damage then 2HAxe, similar HAM costs

Exp. Brawler - Vibro Axe - Armor Piercing 1, similar damage to the 2HCleaver, with a higher Health cost.

Master Brawler - Two Handed Curved Sword - Armor Piercing 0, incredible damage, moderate HAM costs, with Action being the highest.

From Master to Novice Swordsman, you can use the 2HCS vs. mobs without Armor. Mobs with armor, however, should get chopped up with a Cleaver or Vibro Axe. The Cleaver is faster than the Axe, but the Axe is more damaging...overall, they deal about the same damage over time. Personally, I like the Cleaver better. As a Master Weaponsmith myself, the absolute best 2HCS I've made is at 58 DPS, but on average, it is about 40 DPS (most servers will have a 40-45 DPS 2HCS, with a 58-60 DPS sword only available to those servers with smiths who seek out the advanced parts for the 2HCS, and actually find some resources with very very good qualities). Against mobs with Armor Rating of 1, the 2HCS will drop to about 20 DPS, while the Cleaver will stay at 28 DPS, thus, against mobs with Armor, the Cleaver is the better choice (plus, the HAM costs are slightly lower, especially the Action cost, so you can get in some good moves with the Cleaver). I personally alternate between the 2HCS and the Cleaver, as I'm making my way up to Novice Swordsman. Once I hit Novice Swordsman, though, I'll alternate between the 2HCS and the Power Hammer, as the PH is AP 2, and thus MUCH more effective against armored foes.
