I just found this out. I have a peko and a scavanger bird. Birds are fast and get to the target quick before they shoot you. Plus they draw fire from other NPC. I love my birds. I now have no trouble taking out the Stormtrooper camps, you know the really tough ones that run from you.

My peko is 2200 HAM 2.0 attack speed with 150-160 damageand I can buff him to 3500. My Scavanger when he grows up will be 2700 HAM 2.0 and 160-170 damage.

I highly recommend birds..

It largely depends on what you fight most, at least I would think it does. However, the only reason I have ever really needed a pet, was to deal with the "split-ranged mobs". By this I mean the case where 2 or more mobs have run away from each other, out of range of area attacks.

When they are split, one can fire on you while the other melees you. This gives them a much bigger advantage than when they are both meleeing you. With a pet, you can send in a melee pet to attack one of the ranged guys. You wait until the enemy is focused on your pet, then close in on one of the ranged guys that isn't in melee with your pet. Taking him down quickly you then go and assist the pet. It helps if you have medic and can heal your pet as well, or you might be going through a lot of pets.

I use a "roba" its a pig/dog looking thing but I am not sure where it comes from. It is CL15 and has about a 2.5K ham. The nice things about the robaare: it is small, doesn't take up so much space that I cannot see what is going on, it's fast enough to keep up even with burst run, its attacks cause dizzy, and it is pure melee.

The melee part was important to me, because I want the mobs it attacks to have to switch to melee weapons, that way they can't easily change their minds and start firing on me. If someone out there has a better way of using pets with swordsman, I would love to hear it.

I use a Cowardly Gurreck for my pet. 3200HAM, ar0, 10% kinetic resist, 150-160 damage. I have no problems with him tanking 9k HAM Pikets on Dantooine, as long as I keep him healed. As an almost master doctor, that's never a problem

Hi,

I know most ranged skills want a pet with high ham that can tank for them, but I was wondering if this may be different for melee classes.

So,I needrequirements for a good Swordsman pet and the creatures that best meet those requirements.

I prefer using my SpecForce Heavy Weapons guy to an actual creature.

They have more HAM, they have ranged weapons, and they just fit better to my play style (I like being Overt).

Plus at 450 faction that's three or four stormtrooper missions to get one so it's not a huge deal if I somehow lose him.

Usually though I don't use pets, I prefer to take things head on and see what I can do alone or with other players. I mainly use my guy for faction missions where there's a lot of stormtroopers and I need a 'damage soak' to be a diversion while I get in close.

How? Doctor Buffs?

Back on topic, I personaly use a Rock Beetle aswell, and it tanks mobs on Dantooine very well when I keep Intimidate on mobs. And it doesn't need healing that often either. (Everything from Pickets to Mokks and Quenkars) All giveing around 3-4k weapon xp.

Rock Beetles have very good armor with it's AR 1 and 25% Kinetic Resists (Compared to my self anyway), has posture down attack and a ranged acid attack. I wouldent be without my rock beetle in combat since I'd get smacked around silly trying to tank thoes mobs he tanks. I dread the day devs nerfs it, if they do, because I'd be back to soloing Durnies on Corillia haha.

I might add that I'm 3,0,0,3 in Medic profession and use Stim B to keep my self and pet alive, this kinda is costly in the long run.

Cowardly Gurreck.

Also, Mountain Krevol. The Krevol is like a Rock Beetle, except it's got a Melee attack, plus better armor/HAM/damage (by a little bit).

The melee attack is the kicker...as a Meleer, you don't want to draw the aggro off your pet, which you will do if your pet is ranged, and you do Melee.

Hehe yeah, I tried using one of my Storm Commandos for a pet. Needless to say, I ended up flat on my back while the Commando tried to kite the Piket around. However, Dark Troopers make nice melee tanks.
