You probably want to do Techniques first for the speed bonuses and the head hits.

Offense isn't bad still but unless you group a lot and fight multiple opponents the area attacks won't be as useful as the head hits, espcially when you crosstrain in Finesse with combat xp for the mind bleeds.

most heavy sword weilding people go for techniques, then defense, then offense, personally i am doing that, i started working on advanced defence yesterday. but honestly, i dont think it matters which skill you take up first, just so long as your happy. pick up the intermediate of each skill, then decide from there if you want...

i would go for techniques first, at least till advanced. The speed bonus will help greatly and lessen the burden in getting the remaining skills.

Go Tech first, then defense, picking up the finess line as you go. Get offense last-- now that posture down has been nerfed the area attacks basically suck. If you want to use an area attack in a group, you can use the Spin Attack and Sweep from defense. Meanwhile the bonuses you get in defense are much better.
