I'm novice carbineer/novice swordsman but the problem I found this morning (doing a spot of hunting before work) was that when you switch from one to the other you have to run away/toward what your fighting so personally I'd go with pistols (I'm also a novice doc, and I'll probably be dumping the marksman tree in range order - rifles first, then carbines, then pistols probably in order to go up to both master doc and master heavy swordsman).

I look at it in the reverse manner - if I'm going to have two types of weapon, I'm going to want them to be better at different ranges. Thus, Carbineer and Swordsman are a good combo - the sword is what I use when I'm close to my enemies, the carbine is what I use when I'm further out.

I'm working this template on one of my characters, and so far no complaints. The only real question is whether Pikemen will be a better partner after 1) the Pikeman class is repaired, 2) they conclusively split secondary defenses down to specific weapons. The speed difference might make enough of a difference to still prefer Swordsman, and the ability to hit mind as well. And let's face it - if your enemy in PvP doesn't go down with 2 action bleeds stacked, what are the odds that 4 action bleeds will make that much of a difference, right?

The specific-damage is sort of an issue, but with all those counter-attack mods? I'd have to think Carbine/2-hand is the way to go, rather than rifle. You may even be able to live longer up close and personal as a carbineer with all those insane counter-attack mods. I mean you could if they get close, warcry, then use your carbine kd, fall back a bit, get out of range. And if all else fails, switch to the hammer and start waxing them critters.

This combo sucks, don't use it. I already tried it and it's a no-go. I'm heading for pistol / fencer. Seriously.

Is carbineer/swordsman as good as pistoleer/fencer though? I still don't get the difference between dodge and counterattack. Both prevent you from being hit.

Ypiana, could you elaborate on the reasons why you feel the combo sucks? So far I've found it excellent, but maybe you've done something differently than I am?

Because she didn't get master brawler.

I got counterinsurgency 4, master swordsman, master brawler, and 4/0/0/4 TKA, and medic. The template is so awesome it's not even funny. The first day I had the template, I was able to rock five TKMs at ONCE. I just CoBed, bled each one, warcried 2ed em, and intimidated them. Then I just ran in circles watching their life tick away, while they couldn't touch me because of my counterattack.

But if you want the ultimate template, then you should get rifleman/fencer/TKA, and whatever other melee/range defese you can pull. The only downfall to counterattack, is bleeds go right through it, whereas with melee/ranged defense, the bleeds will miss.

I don't think master carbineer is worth it. Just get counterinsurgency 4. You get extra CoB skill from mastering brawler, too, which makes up for the counterattack you'd have gotten from master carbineer.

I'd also recommend getting a nice arsenal of weapons. I personally carry like 6 weapons. PH for bleeds against someone without good melee defense, a cleaver for good overall damage, a +18 accuracy curved sword for people with good melee defense (still need to get some accuracy powerups for it, though), a high damage 2H curved for taking wear and tear, and a 1H curved sword for people with low melee defense that I can 1H dizzy then lunge 2. I'd also recommend getting some +warcry/intimidate clothing (if you wear armor, you can still get a shirt with it.).

Warcry 2 and CoB are my bread and butter.

Heh, and I'll tell you one thing that's for sure. If I came up against a pistoleer/fencer, I guarantee I would win. Niether us us could really hit each other, but I could smack them with an unhealable mind bleeder, which goes right through their dodge. All they could do to me is give me a health bleeder, which I can heal with stims, lol.
