so if the klikniks do attack you run over and kill them or get them into melee.

As I understand it the ranged attack from creatures bypasses armor so it wouldn't matter what you are wearing and that is why you take more damage when they spit at you. I am not 100% sure but I can tell you that all other spitting creatures I have ever encountered it doesn't matter if I am wearing my ubese kinetic suit or my good composite suit, I get hit for quite a bit of damage only when they spit at me.
