Well... I'm not a big military buff RL, but I do watch the History Channel sometimes ^^ Having a TV in the same room as my PC is good for those long boring camps in other games *grin*

Something I've noticed that SWG lacks are "light heavy weapons." Oxymoron, sort of... but armies have several sizes of machineguns and rockets designed for different use. Here in SWG there are heavy cannons and rocket launchers and such for use in the Commando profession that look like they'll do nasty damage, but no weapons that are designed for "team support firing." These types of weapons would do decent damage but have primarily support-oriented specials.

I think this would be a great role for squad-leader specific weapons, certifications, and better "support special" attacks than are available in the Ranged Support lineup from Marksman. Light machine guns for a specific example, that we can use to do wide area suppressive firing, area threaten-shot or warning-shot attacks, etcetera. It could also have more-effective versions of these specials, like "pinning fire" (drops a target to prone and "roots" them) as another example.

Another such example could be a mortar. An example for itsspecial could be "trajectory fire" - the effect is to let you hit something that's behind an obstacle, in a ditch,or otherwise out of LOS.

Just an idea I had ^^ It's not meant to take away from the Commando's heavy weapons use... rather to give SL's a special niche in weaponry that's oriented towards team support firing, using the concept of 'light heavy weapons.'

It could also be an elegant solution to the SL experience gain problem - give us SL experience for using our support weapons to do support speicals.

Frankly, this sounds like a fantastic idea for a whole new profession, some sort of Crowd Control specialist or something...

But such sweeping changes are a very long way down the road...

I agree completely. The weapons don't need to be as powerful as a Commandos weapons, but they should be more team based, and have specials like supression fire.

You guys are taking this all wrong. He doesn't need support weapons, he needs universal support specials! I'm actually saddened that most of the 'support' specials are on carbine since i chose pistol (im not too keen on starting that over again, stupid combat xp...) but he could use a few others, even ones you named (since the ones in the carbine branch are initial proffesion skills anyway). He could get skills like advanced spreadfire etc.... Make him have similar skills but BETTER cuz he's a support person. ANd yes give him special support xp (ala my other forum) for using these specials.

Pikeman : The only class that couldn't hit the ground if they dropped their weapon.
Pikeman : Doing massive damage; to the air surrounding our target.
Pikeman : You're dead meat, unless you happen to be standing in front of us.
Pikeman : Because the devs were one profession short.
DEVs : Pikeman? Thats a class?

Hmm, I like the idea of this being a squad leader functionfor a lot of reasons.

First,as has been noted the number of abilities and skills for each box of squad leader is a little bare. Giving us certs and weapons specials would be nice for filling that out and beefing up the content for SLs.

Tying that in to helping us get SL experience helps to mitigate our advancement problems - especially if we'd get SL exp for using those specials even if we were in a team already (meaning we could team with other SL's and both benefit).

It would also mean that an SL wouldn't be effectively required to take another Elite Weapon profession like Carbineer in order to fight effectively with the teams they lead.

It solves the "nobody in the team wants to use their support specials cause the exp stinks" problem - the SLgets a good set of support specials that give them exp.

It gives the SL a unique, desireable, and visible role in teams. Anyone can bark orders and if they are good they will be listened to, the title over the head is meaningless. Our group buffs are nice but invisible to our teammates, and passive (thus boring) for us.Our existing specials - as has been noted - aren't useful in every battle.

So I think a special ranged support lineup for SL would be a great way to fix or reduce all those issues without detracting from the teaming-and-tactics orientation of the profession, without giving the SL puppetmaster like control over teammates, and without profession-balancing problems (since no such profession currently exists we wouldn't be stepping on toes).

But are the BH cannons "team support" oriented, or just "does more damage" oriented?

That's my thrust... there are a pretty limited number of "support specials" that are useful for crowd control or for "combo moves" with other players, and it seems like that would be a very natural capability for a squad leader type - using a support weapon to help control a battle.

Holy Crap.

I was just giving the tree a look over, as over on the TC i've decided to go from Ranger goal to SL goal, and thinking "MAN....this thing is just....BARE." Never mind that the Master Squad Leader has the stat bonuses the NOVICE should have, but...

This is brilliant. A few SL only weapons, a whole lot of SL group support attacks, stuff that dosn't requrie us to be up front, while not intruding on the Commando niche.......this is brilliant. I mean totally so. Devs, pay this man.

From what I can tell, Commando weapons don't do nasty damage.

But they'll be fixed eventually, then they should
