I was in a group recently who had a leader - squad leader I assume - that could "paint" a target and we could see a red mass over the target's head. We knew to attack that particular one. Now, I am 4444 SL - and have not seen this skill. And please do not tell me it's volley fire - I have tried that and it does not work. Unless I am doing something completely wrong. Anyone know? Or is that skill a completely different profession?

Sounds like Volley Fire to me. I know of nothing else that even comes close.

So is there a right way to use it?

If Im not allowed to say it I cant give you the right answere.
But I just overrider your command since Im MSL thus have a "higher rank" .

Yes it is very likely Volleyfire.
No you'r doing nothing wrong.
You only can see that effect when you have your particle effects set to highest setting (maybe you changed it).

The red mass looks like two crosshairs, creating "a 3D red ball".

It draws a lot of aggro but increase damage taken from your group by 15%.
It also works with the pass through/assist command.

I only can agree with the above posters, i also would know nothing else than volley fire for that description. If you have it, use it often and freely, as soon as a target needs 7 or more shots to kill (7 shots total, doen't matter if the target goes down after one or two shots of you, if a complete team fires on the target...) volley fire pays off.

And on the pass through thing, yea. I often have a smuggler/commando in team, best to always assist him, makes sure not to break his crowd control by accident.

you've described volley fire as the special the group leader is using. if you can see it from him, you should be able to see it from you. so, i doubt its a settings issue. the can only think of one thing that would not allow it to work. are you the group leader when you try to use VF? if memory serves correctly, you must be the group leader to use that and most other SL specials.

Thanks guys - I will test it again now that I have MSL. I assume this works in PvP as well?

Yes, on an enemy. One that you're going to attack preferably. lol

No, not really. I use it frequently, on whatever I'm attacking. Mind you, on lower level creatures and npc's I don't. I can pull out a can of whoop arse on them and not even bother.
