As far as I can tell, because before, there wasnt pistol xp required and people didnt want to be forced into a pre-set 'template'. That's a subject that pops up enough I dont need to go into it. Mostly it's about what people find is fun, some builds suit them better then others and it's worth it to drop some pistols after they get to master and grind out somthing els.

I was master pistoleer before I too converted to carbines. It all depends on what you want. I saw a pic that just screamed Talley. Plus, I had to wear the clone trooper armor, again, it fit the character. And once I got /chargeshot, it was even more of a match made in heaven on how i saw SL.

there are a couple reasons why many MSL's are not MPistoleers

here's my first example. (i thought this was going to be stickied)

second, carbines, when talking about elite ranged profs, are more balanced between offense and defense than the others. pistols have higher defs; rifles have higher offense.

andwhen making a build of MSL / MCarb there is enough left over to get several boxes of pistols, including Stopping Shot and Disarming Shot. the same can be said of the carbine tree, but like mentioned above, carbines are more balanced and give better mods when combined with pistol than combining Master Pistoleer with some Carbineer.

but IMO, the most balanced build you can get would be MSL / MBH / elite ranged (just dont forget to find a way to get Dizzy Recovery. you cant use Form Up if you yourself are dizzy)

So as you can see Tyser, even with these few posts, it varies widely why people chose a different weapon than pistol. I originally was going to go rifleman since I could plink away at an enemy from 64 yards and issue commands while the others are more up close and personal. I still may go rifleman, but I haven't decided if I will or not.

With Carbines like the Grev. Striker having a max range of 60m, its possible to have the range of a rifle and similar damage while having what I think are better large scale PVP specials like suppresion fire and full area auto. Carbines just fit the style of SL for me.

My template was Master Squad Leader / Smuggler / Pistols 4-0-0-0

It was a great template and with my totchee pistol I was shooting for 635 Modified DPS with a SAC of 75!

Giving your team burst run and being a non-gimped squad leader, I was very very survivable. Add in the daze effects of smuggler and you can crowd control 3-4 stragglers and call back up.

Apply state debuffs and Volley Fire and the target is toast. One-On-One this template lacks a bit because of healing. The range is a bit disconcerting, as pistols only have very limited range, and against jedi you're w/in range.

So, what to do? I switch to blaster fist, run Center of Being and use melee strike, leg sweep, etc... Yes funny? But my ranged accuracy was a bit too low (low 200s) to actually do any real damage. That and saber block causes a lot of ranged shots to miss. So I was consistently hitting 400's or so with my blaster fist, better than the occassional 300-400 shot from improved body shot that occassionally lands.

Add in Volley Fire, and you're good to go. You do need backup, as a stim user you'll need healing. Good thing about smuggler is Recon Armor.

So, is the Flavor of the Month. Think not. But it's good. However for one on one PVP you need healing. This is good if you go Special Forces and bust up some bases. All you need really is a BE/Commando.. BH's are a dime a dozen. Just stop by Kaadara, and most would be happy to help.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I actually did add this to the new FAQ. It just ain't posted yet - mostly because real life has been a harsh mistress the last couple of weeks. I'm on it.
