It depends on two things:
(a) Check the 1.2 Who would make good Squad Leader? paragraph of the Official Squad Leader FAQ v3.1
If you mostly play grouped, like a support role to enhance the group as well as put your personal skill into it to coordinate the group, thus coordinate your attack, assign roles to your group (tank, support, damage dealers) as well as like to help others getting to know their own profession better as well as to help them to learn how to fight better in groups, master squad leader is the title you want to wear.
Still the full MSL is draining on your skill points. If you still like above but dont want to dedicate all of your skillpoints to be one among the few real jedi on SWG you come to the second:
(b) Your current template. If you still like leading but want to also maximize your effect on the battlefield (in PvE or PvP) you want to get most effect out of your skillpoints and template, what will lead you to not take the full MSL since sadly some of the abilities are still in PRE CU state and only have a very mininal effect in the POST CU world of SWG.
If you already have novice scout in your template and are a ranged profession you need the 0004 scout tree (14 skill points) and the novice squad leader (6 skillpoints) to get at least the /sys msg and the ability to slice bases, but thats already all.
If you can further spare some skillpoints in order of importance you take
So a very common SL dabbler has 0404 to also gain the title strategist and tactican.
In the end only a few ppl are being born to wander the although mostley grouped but still lonely path of a true Master Squad Leader

- (a) your play style
(b) your current template

- 0300 to have volleyfire what will increase the damage your target takes by 15% for 30 seconds
- 0001 to have rally to boost for your whole group defense by +40 (ranged and melee) as well as your accuracy by +80 for 45 seconds and
- 0003 to have retreat to give your group (but not yourself) a free burstrun.

p.s.
Some ppl are still trying to AFK macro Squad leader hidden in a house (not saying you want to do that
).
Its not possible. To gain the benefit of the squad leader abilities, you need to be within 128m (to my current observations).
Have fun!

Hunt using the best pistol you can. Though, it's a bit tricky and depends on what weapon you're going to take. If you master pistoleer first then squad leader, you do better damage to raise SL. Though, if you want to go with another weapon, it's a bit trickier, but I'll try and see if I can find the post where we discussed it and make a clicky for you so right now, the question you need to answer is what weapon are you going to use?
Here we go. Kharast's first message in the link is the other way to do it without having to do pistol's first. Raising SL without Pistol Experience
