I was thinking of doing a Fencer/SL combo, would this be benifical? or a good ol' waste of time?

Sl is a waste as it is, rotfl.

Instead of wasting all these points on sl, put em into rifleman or pistolierre, some useufl ranged skill

Sorry, I am not to familure with Fencer, but from what I understand, it is very simuler to Pistoleer. It has a good mix of Melee, Ranged, and Special defences. I have heard that defences no longer stack (or stack to a certain maximum) and SL can take you past that point with the passive bonuses (when in a group).

I have made a post on SL and other Professions (click on my name and you should be able to find it) and you could get a idea of a breakdown on points and the like. There might even be a few posts by people who have done Fencer. If you do go fencer I would like to hear your thoughts on it as a Profession combined with SL.

Good luck!

its good for staying alive, because it has a lot of defenses.. but its not so good at dealing damage.

Come the squad leader revamp it'll be great as an add-onbecause it will allow you to focus primarily on helping the group with SL without having to worry so much about dieing.

HEY I HAVE AN IDEA. IF YOU THINK SL IS SUCH A WASTE OF TIME, WHY DON'T YOU BE AN ADULT AND STOP WASTING OUR TIME ON OUR FORUM.

As long as you make sure to pay more attention to your groups status than personal fighting, this I have found to be an issue with sl/melee combo's

Anyone else have any input i am currently pondering this template, MSL, MF, Scout 4004, Marksman 0404 verus becoming a Master Pistoleer instead of Master Fencer?

Ok - I have done something VERY similair to this and I can give you a little bit better advice from experience...

I did Master SL and Master Pikeman. Not only because of love Pikeman but because I THOUGHT it had great defence... it doesn't but anyway...

For skill points... it is a Waist! SL takes too many that it shouldn't (at least at its current state) but hopefully will later be well worth it. Add the fact that you now AT MINIMUM need 3 basic Profs to just do it... (Scout/Marks for SL and Brawler for Fencer) that's 45 points right there.

If you do end up trying it... some suggestions...

As stated by others... putting yourself on the front line to fight makes it REALLY hard to govern a group. You will start using commands for yourself rather than the group. I Mastered Pikeman soloing things so I wouldn't do that to the group members. Once I Mastered it, I didn't put myself on the front line until an event cause me to. I basically played myself as a Medic Protector. This works great! You stand back... use /retreat to get your brawlers to move in quick on target. Then just sit back and watch... if anything bleeds past the front line toa medic or a Marksman... Step up and /polearmSweep /polearmhit3 and by then (if the medic/marksman is smart) they would have moved out of harms way. Staying back allows you to use /formup more effectively as well as /steadyaim and /rally at times of big targets or PvP. (Warning in PvE ... unless in corvette or other places with non-harvestable things -- most groups don't like /rally. BUT ... it is a GREAT ability. It really does add to defence and hitting ability.)

Now... after saying this ... there is a downside depending on what the purpose of your person is...

IF ... you are first and foremost a Fighter who just wants SL for ToHit bonuses and Defence mods... then I think you are better off going with Fencer/Pistol. Mainly because of the heavy skill points it takes up and the fact that people will expect a SL to lead and if all you want to do is kill... you're not being a very good SL.

IF ... you truely want to be a SL and just want to know a good fighting class with it... then choose any of the Marksmen classes. Rifle/Carbine/Pistol. This is for several reasons and what I'm doing now...

1) /volleyfire can be used ... even though it stinks. Can't use it unless you're ranging attacking.

2) My feelings is that a TRUE Squad Leader should have novice Medic AND Entertainment skills. Makes them useful in almost EVERY situation which is what they should be. Having Brawler doesn't allow this to happen. Not enough SP.

I have recently gone away from the medic protector SL/Pike ... and have gone to the medic protector AND supportive fire SL/Pistol. This gives me the best of both worlds I feel. I can sit back and just supply cover fire. The speed of Pistol doesn't delay my SL commands I need to use. /Volleyfire still works. Defences are decent AND I still have a KD attack and good at short range to be the medic protector. This with the abliltiy to heal damage during fights and body AND mind wounds at camps. I have medical mod clothes for when I need medic. I have entertainment clothes for when I'm entertaining. I have my set of composite for when fighting. I feel I am a GREAT Squad Leader. A well-rounded charature... as I feel the SL should be.

Here is the exact template if you want it:

Marks 0404 : Pistol4444+M : Scout 4004 : SL 4444+M : Medic 2000 : Entertainer 0001

I hope this helps.

It's so true I had to quote it. Having a SL around makes a huge difference in group based PvP.
